I found a brand new SLOW slow cooker!!!!!

Okay, so after making my first slow cooker meal in my new Rival Smart Pot a couple of weeks ago and having it horribly overcooked in less time than the recipe called for, and watching it boil away like mad, I came here and found out that apparently all the new slow cookers cook too hot. I was already pretty much ready to give it up.

Welllll, I was surfing on Amazon the other day and came across this slow cooker and a few customers gave it good reviews saying it cooked slow like a slow cooker is supposed to!

So I said to heck with it, I'm giving it one more shot! Well, I just cooked a beef stew today, the recipe called for 8 hours and that's exactly how long I cooked it. Well, IT CAME OUT PERFECT!!! The meat is tender, the vegetables are not overcooked, and it tastes great! I am so excited!!!

Anyway, my wonderful new crock pot is the Farberware FSSC500. It's a very simple appliance; no bells or whistles, but it does what it's supposed to do!!!

I looked it up and one reviewer gave the following cooking temperatures:
High -210 degress F.
Low -165 F.
Keep Warm -140 F.

My Rival has these temperatures from my own tests:
High -240 degress F.
Low -208 F.
Keep Warm -140 F.

Quite a difference. My crockpot on low is essentially equal to the other one's high setting. I like it.

That's a HUGE difference in temperature. No wonder so many people complain about the new ones.

Sometimes I look at the slow cookers in the stores, nice stainless steel, keep warm, timers, etc and I really want to get rid of my old Rival that's white with the greeny ivy design. The new ones would look so nice on my kitchen counter.

Then I read threads like this one and slap myself.

Ok, I took the plunge and ordered one of these too! My dissapointing new rival crockpot has burned its last pot of chili!!!! Thanks for the tip - I'll let everyone know how it works for me. Gosh I have been missing my crockpot!

Well, I DID it.

I ordered from Amazon it turned out to be over $50 so I cancelled that and saw I could get the Slow Cooker Cookbook which would bring my total over $25 and qualify me for the free shipping. (somehow, I probably did something wrong because all this stuff is over my head )

Anyway, I got both for $36.
I have 2 crock pots but my mother has confiscated one of them and I was thinking about getting another one anyway.

Just realized I never came back to post my results - I LOVE this crockpot. I've made chili, whole chickens, meatballs and sauce and even a big pot of applesauce. All were great, all cooked all day, up to 10 hours without overcooking. This is a great crockpot!

Mine came today and right now I have beans and smoked necks in it.

The one thing that I wish it had, is a light to let me know it's cooking. OK What do I expect for $24.10

I know I'm going to be like a new mother who worries when the baby sleeps through the night for the first time.

I'm going to have to get up and make sure its working.

I am SO excited.

Congrats! I never even knew the new ones had lights. I always just put my hand to the side of the crock and if it's warm it's working.

At least the ones I have do.

I just got up once to check the side to see if it was warm and went back to bed when I was satisfied it was working.

Beans came out great. NOW, I'll have to give it a real test.

I did notice that the insert is not as thick or as heavy as the others. But, that's fine with me. I'm not a weightlifter

Did you get the farberware fssc 5000 croock pot and if so what sight did you go on to find it? I have a new one and it does cook way to fast. I like to put it on when I leave for work in the morning but the one I have now I can't do that, so I was thrilled to hear about the farberware one.

Thanks so much for posting this crockpot....I found it on Amazon and ordered it...waiting anxiously for it to get here so I can test drive it. Will post a review after that. I already have a 6 quart oval rival smart pot with the timer, etc. But I find that it does cook hot. Will keep it for beans, etc.

Let us know how you like it. I have a rival just like yours and it's fine for most things, but I did burn some baked beans recently. The sides of the crock just get too hot for some items.
