    what is passover yeast?

Hi, I'm a gentile and don't eat kosher but in recent months I have been trying to eat a yeast-free diet to calm candida and because a natropath tested me positive for mold allergy.

A big thing that has been hard to find is beef and chicken broth that doesn't have added yeast. I can find them in liquid form (thankfully!) but not in bullion. I bought some beef cubes from the kosher section "Telma" beef flavor stock cube. At the time I couldn't find the ingredients, it just said to mail them for the ingredients. Next time I went to the store I noticed the ingredients and there was "passover yeast" in it. What? I thought that passover was a yeast-free holiday!?

Now that I am back at home I see one of the cubes that I bought first DID have ingredients on it. And this one just says yeast extract. *sigh* So I guess I'd better keep getting my beef broth liquid from Trader Joe's.

I DO get the Matzo crackers from the kosher section but only a few stores have the whole wheat ones. I am also trying to give up white flour to help with the candida. It was a surprise to find that traditional saltine crackers have added yeast (also tortillas which don't need them either!)

    From the Chabad.org website:

    This was regarding wine:

Of the hundreds of species of yeast, the Passover prohibition only applies to yeast which is a product of one of the following five grains: wheat, barley, oat, spelt, or rye. Yeast which is the product of grapes, or its sugars, is not considered chametz (leavened food).

I wonder if yeast from grapes can be used in other produts?

I found this too.... it may be the source of some "Passover yeast extract":

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torula

But this is just what I found googling this topic. I really know nothing about this. I wonder if a nutritionist could help you. It might be worth the cost of a session to decipher some things.

OK thanks. That helps. I just assumed yeast was yeast and didn't realize that the source mattered. I am avoiding ALL yeast (although the most recent trip to the natropath did not show mold this time) if I can help it.
