    Celebrating May With National Mediterranean Diet Month

    US News Health gives the Mediterranean Diet 4 out of 5 stars as one of the best overall diets in the new 2012 diet rankings.

    The Mediterranean Diet resembles other US News rated diets including the DASH, Mayo Clinic, and Vegetarian diets.

    The aim of the Mediterranean Diet includes weight loss, heart and brain health, cancer prevention, and diabetes prevention and control.

    A Mediterranean Diet is claimed to help you lose weight and keep it off along with avoiding a host of chronic diseases.

    The theory behind the Mediterranean diet is it's generally accepted that the folks in the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea live longer and suffer less than most Americans from cancer and cardiovascular ailments. The not-so-surprising secret is an active lifestyle, weight control, and a diet low in red meat, sugar, and saturated fat and high in produce, nuts, and other healthful foods.

    The Mediterranean diet emphasizes:

    Getting plenty of exercise
    Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts
    Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil
    Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods
    Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month
    Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week
    Drinking red wine in moderation (optional)

    The diet also recognizes the importance of enjoying meals with family and friends.

    This sounds like a great diet. Wish I didn't have to eat so much protein, because I rarely eat a fruit or vegetable. I am beginning to wonder if that is what is effecting my memory. It gets worse by the day and I can't get my doctor to believe me that it is that bad.

    I am not sure about your memory and not eating fruits and vegetables Jacqueline but it could be a good possibility it is related. I have been to doctors that have made me feel like the biggest idiot when they were done with me but you keep telling yours about the memory problems or find another doctor that will listen to you.

    Here are two things that come to mind quickly for getting fruits and vege's in for the day. icon_smile.gif

    I am making it a point to eat at least two small servings of vegetables or fruit a day. I don't do juice at all, nothing in it except carbs. Now protein drinks I do 3 a day, but that and water and diet Sprite are about all I drink. The doctor told me no V8 fusion prior to surgery and not to drink fruit juice. He also told me no carbonated beverages at all, none, ever, they have changed that some, but I did notice that my weight loss dropped a lot when I added them back in to my diet. I am trying to give them up again.

    I googled and found a few articles regarding memory loss after weight-loss surgery - you might want to take one to show your doctor.

    Although others said it improved it

    I suspect it's highly individual, sounds like it might be linked to vitamin deficiencies.
