Making moldable chocolate?

Hi there,
I am hoping to create a cake for my daughter's birthday and I came across a technique called 'moldable chocolate' or 'plastic chocolate'. What it says to do is take a pound of chocolate (melted) and mix with Karo syrup. I used a candy coating that I bought from Country Kitchen Sweetart so I could use the nice purple color - and it melts like a dream, but when I mixed the Karo syrup into it, I started to get a lot of watery runoff. I put it into the plastic wrap as suggested, but I never heard anything about a watery runoff. I poured the runoff down the drain and put the mixed product into plastic. Is there a reason anyone can think of that my mixture might have produced runoff?

The candy coating is a mixture of things - it's not like pure chocolate. I am wondering whether you would have been able to just melt the coating and put it into the forms. I've not used this type of product, this is my best guess.

The "watery" run-off is actually oil from the candy melts [cocoa powder + palm oil usually].

When chocolate is mixed with the corn or glucose syrup, it also can produce run-off also which is cocoa butter.

I'm not familiar with moldable chocolate but I am very familiar with the chocoale substitute you are talking about. The seperation is palm oil it's what makes them melty like butter, it's a solid at room temperature. When melting stuff like Wilton Candy Melts when they seperate it's usually from the temp being to high, cool it off a bit by Mixing it with a fork till it starts to hold together. When you buy white chocolate it has cocao butter and has a yellow tint but you can add OIL BASED food coloring to change the color. This works great when you want multiple colors. Have fun.
