Eugane Henri Paul Gauguin , known as Paul Gauguin was born in Paris, France on June 7 1848 and died May 8 1903 in Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.

At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the merchant marine and later became a successful stockbrocker. Gauguin's hobby was painting, which he pursued enthusiastically in his free time.

By 1884, Gauguin, decided to give up business and family, devoting himself entirely to painting. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in French Polynesia. Gauguin arrived in Polynesia to find the authenticity of its daily life and its culture, pervceiving the South Pacific as a land of beautiful and strong people, who were unspoiled by Western civilization. He tried to express his feelings through shapes and colors, moving away from the more European accepted styles of painting.

The vogue for Gauguin's work started soon after his death. Gauguin paintings are rarely offered for sale; their price may be as high as $39.2 million US dollars.

Gauguin is today regarded today as a highly influential founder of modern art.

Gauguin enjoyed using bright and bold areas of color in his paintings done on the Pacific Islands. He painted many scenes from daily life, as seen in the above painting titled, Still Life with Teapot and Fruit (1896)

For all children up to 16 years of age.
~ I've been asked - and happy to include 16 year olds in our challenge ~

You can have your children grandchildren, nieces, nephews, younger brothers and sisters or even a borrowed child from a neighbour or friend to help you complete this part of the challenge.

Create a picture of a tropical fruit or fruits with your inspiration from the exotic Pacific Islands.
Use bright colors as Gauguin did. Color with pencils, paints or crayons, or use *any* thing around your kitchen.
Scan a copy of your masterpiece or take a photo of it and post it to this thread.
(You will need to upload your photo or scanned artwork from your PC to an image hosting website first)
Don't forget to tell us a little about your young artist.

    GET CRAFTY!!!

I would LOVE to do this challenge with my niece. I just want to check, do we have to use the provided links for colouring pages?

"For anyone not wishing to have kids draw their own picture.........
I've found some coloring printables on the net..."

My little sweetie has tons of colouring books and there are some sites that are great to get pictures from.

    Thanks!

My son painted "the kitchen counter with cucumbers on it." When I told him that it didn't look like the kitchen counter with cucumbers, he told me he really had fun using all the colors just like the Gauguin paintings we looked at. I hope that is ok? icon_wink.gif

This is my daughter, Athina - she loves to draw! She's 10 1/2 years old and will be attending grade 6 in September. She's on summer holiday right now, and very, VERY happy about that.

    This is her, drawing:
