    weaning child with allergies

    When DD1 was a baby we were really conservative and held off on a lot of foods until she was 1 yr. There is history of dairy sensitivities as well as tomato. Not to mention the over-kill caution of first time parents!

    Well now DD2 is at that age. I had good intentions but it is SO hard to find things to make and I'm not good with fixing the same thing all the time so I introduced new foods much quicker. At the same time she was teething and her sleep became more erratic. I was not able to identify any issues with the foods she was eating until we started giving her straight cow's milk since I wanted to move her toward weaning. (this with the Doc's OK). After a few nights it finally became clear that she was NOT digesting the milk. She would scream in pain all night and there was nothing I could do to console her!

    At that time I removed all dairy from her diet. I did keep giving her soy milk which she seems to be tolerating. I noticed around the same time that she was getting a diaper rash which was unusual for her. I removed wheat and the rash has cleared up for the most part.The wheat (gluten?) sensitivity is severe enough that I noticed it coming back and and had to look over the foods I was giving her. Found an oat cereal that had some wheat in it so I stopped giving her that.

    We tried goat's milk and she also screamed all night and was spitting up so I won't be trying that again.

    She is turning 12 months this month. I really want to wean her for various reasons (did so with DD1 and it was a good age for the transition, her teeth are bothering me, etc). But I don't think there is enough fat in her diet right now. When I give her a bottle with soy milk she still takes a full nursing session afterwards.

    Here are the foods she does eat:
    Soymilk
    chicken
    beans (need to make up a batch from scratch and freeze!)
    green beans, peas, carrots
    cheerios, oatmeal etc
    rice
    corn
    white and sweet potatoes
    hummous
    berries (she has been exposed to them with no ill effects)
    avocado?? I think she can eat this fine but it is expensive so I don't know if I want to make that a staple.

    Foods I will NOT be giving her: wheat, dairy, beef and tomatoes (she had a soup with beef and tomatoes and screamed all night... probably the tomatoes but I don't plan on trying either for a while)

    As you can see, there is plenty to work with. The main concern is fats. The above list doesn't allow for much natural fat. I may try some whipping cream and try adding it to the soy milk to see if she tolerates it. It has only trace lactose and protein so maybe she will do OK with it.

    Wondering if anyone else has had this challenge and how did you handle it?

    I can think of two options for milk

    I weaned both my daughters and found they had lactose intolerance ....co cow's milk wasn't going to happen.
    We did use a fantastic soy formula that also had a 2nd formula for older babies/toddlers. Called Infasoy here...but you may get other brands. You will need to check that they are gluten-free suitable.

    There are also lactose free milks available in both long-life shelf milks and fresh refrigerated milks. You may find these are a good solution for you. There are also calcium enriched versions available here.

    Just with the oats- many celiacs/gluten-intolerant may also react to the protein found in oats. Outside of the US....oats mainly are not considered to be suitable on a gluten-free diet. Maybe you could try a porridge made on rolledor flaked rice or quinoa. Sweeten with a little pureed fruits for taste -apple is good

    I don't mean to alarm you ......but for a child with allergies/intolerances, I do think it would be worthwhile asking your doctor or health professional for a referral to an allergy specialist or dietician. Your baby may have Celiac/Coeliac Disease and if so ongoing health problems. Many celiacs also have issues with lactose/dairy and often other food related allergies and intolerances

    She has had oats for a while with no reaction. From what I have heard, oats in and of themselves don't have gluten but they are often cross-contaminated during manufacturing. Of course, I'll let the doctor know at her next visit and if he wants me to see someone, we'll be happy to. At this point I just think she hasn't developed well enough to tolerate certain proteins.
    RE: lactose free dairy. I was heading down this route (Hubby tolerates them well) but had read that cottage cheese is very low in lactose and tried to re-introduce it. She did not seem to sleep comfortably so I won't try any dairy for a while. I DID find a good soy milk with DHA added. I think she may not be keen on the flavor but I'll keep trying.
