We hope anyone who partakes in this game can gather better understanding and information about The Holy month of Ramadan and why it’s significant for Muslims. The Islamic calendar is based on the Lunar Year. In the 9th month is when the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammed (s.a.a.w.) and the month of Ramadan. It is obligatory for Muslims to fast this month unless they are exempt. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and it means abstinence from dawn to dusk. This means no food and no beverages (water included). The goal of fasting is to develop self restraint as stated in The Holy Quran and a time to reflect and be grateful for what we have that others may not.

“Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may develop Taqwa (self restraint)’ [2:183]

Because of our obligated fasting it’s easy to see how the 2 meals of the day are so important and the need for this game. Planning and cooking for each day is important and many families like to enjoy a variety of food and special items. The last 2 years this game has helped enjoy our daily cooking and a nice forum to chat about food and our holiday.

The first meal before the fast is Suhoor and the meal to break the fast is Iftar. Suhoor is eaten before the early Morning Prayer and it is meant to be light and sustain us through the day. Iftar is the big meal where we break our fast and enjoy this time of eating with family. The Iftar meal normally has a table full of different things including a main dish, side dishes, soup, salad, bread, various olives, pickles and condiments. Soup is generally served first to nourish the body and then the main dish is served along with the side dishes that will be scooped up with pita bread. Later in the night after prayer coffee, tea and sweets are enjoyed. Each day is a full menu even though we fast from dawn to dusk.

Hopefully the discussions will be insightful and fun. What better way to bring about community and understanding than through food. icon_smile.gif

May our fasts be purposeful and rewarding InshAllah (God Willing). Ameen

    How to play:
    1) Find out who' is "IT". i.e. the last person to "TAG" a recipe.

    2) Choose one of "IT"s qualifying recipes to "TAG"

    3) Post a reply here, telling us which recipe you plan to make. You are now IT.
The next player will then choose one of your recipes to TAG. (Please check after posting your tag that you weren't beaten to the tag by another player).

    4) Prepare and review the recipe you chose, then report back to this thread within 2 weeks to let us know you have made it.

    The Basics:

    * Only qualifying recipes can be tagged: all recipes that do not contain Pork, Gelatin, Alcohol or Intoxicants qualify for this game.

*To enter you should have at least 2 qualifying recipes posted. This gives other members a bit of variety to choose from. You can create a separate cook book for your Ramadan Tag recipes, but you don't have to.

    * If you can't review your chosen recipe(s) within the 2 weeks, please request an EXTENSION. A 2-week extension will be granted.

*If you tag a recipe and later realise you just won't be able to make it at all, select a different recipe from the same person's list and please let me know here of your SUBSTITUTION recipe.

    * When tagging a recipe, let us know in the thread by typing recipe# 123456 . Replace 12346 with the recipe number that you have chosen. There should be no spaces typed.

    * You can tag as many recipes as you think you can make within a 2-week period.

In Islam, Friday is the best day of the week. On Friday there are certain blessings that may be bestowed particular to that day. The afternoon prayer on Fridays consists of two speeches which are given before the prayer, and this day is especially important during Ramadan. Most families like to have a big, extravagant dinner to celebrate Fridays, and this has been incorporated into the Ramadan Tag Game. Every Friday during the game will be Menu Friday. Once it becomes 12am Friday, chefs will be able to tag a variety of recipes instead of just one. This will allow us to tag a complete menu for either Suhoor (the meal before the fast) or Iftar (the meal that breaks the fast). Chefs may tag a menu for any other meal as well, as this game is open to everyone

The rules for Menu Friday are as follow:
    1. Menu tags must be made after 12am on Fridays.
    2. The tag must consist of at least 2 recipes, but may contain as many as the chef needs to complete their menu.
    3. Chefs may tag up to two menus on Fridays and single tags may also continue to be made.
    4. The last tag that was made on Thursday nights will determine who will be it first on Fridays.
    5. The last recipe listed in the menu tags will determine who will be IT next.
    6. Pictures are not mandatory, but are welcomed!
