Baby Shower Gift- Making a Diaper Cake /Nappy Cake

A friend from work has just left to start on her maternity leave and her bubs is due in 9 weeks. we will be having a baby shower next weekend and I wanted to organise a surprise.

Mum to be has organised a beautiful nursery with green as her feature colour.

I saw some home-made gifts at a nearby market and decided to have a go at making a Diaper (Nappy) Cake. Expensive to buy and they really didn't look hard to make.

I've searched on the internet and seems to be a whole heap of different ways to put together Diaper Cake. Basically though, all include either disposable or cloth diapers and put together to resemble a cake.

Now, I decided to use disposable nappies and bought a pack of newborn size- 32 nappies to the pack. I also decided that I wanted to include some baby items and toys. Decorate with some green ribbons.

    Here's my list of purchases

    - 1 pkt newborn disposable diapers/nappies
    - 1 packet elastic bands- varoius sizes
    - 1 lightweight cot blanket
    - 3 light muslin wraps (pastel colors including green)
    - 1 clear ruler
    - 4 metres of 1 inch wide green ribbon
    - 3 metres of a thinner purple ribbon
    - 3 teether toys
    - a teether cloth book
    - 2 soft stuffed animals for the top
    - clear cellophane to wrap gift

Now...nothing left to do but get started!

Step 1- roll all of the diapers neatly and secure them with elastic bands.

Step 2- I decided the cot blanket would form the centre of the base row and folded it to be about hte height of the nappy. I secured it with a wide elastic band.

Step 4- I placed nappies around the outside and moved the band to be holding them in place too.

Step 5- I folded a muslin wrap, again the height of the diapers and wrapped this around the base layer. This layer I secured by tying ribbons around the whole lot. All of the elastic bands are now hidden.

Step 6- I Placed the ruler into the centre of the base layer. This will hold the layers together as the cake grows around it.

Step 7- I fold and wrapped a muslin wrap to be the centre of the second layer. Wrapped this around the ruler and secured with another elastic band.

Step 8- placed more diapers around the 2nd layer and slipped these under the elastic band. I wrapped this layer with another folded muslin wrap and secured in place with ribbons.

Step 9- Used the remaining diapers to form the third cake layer and secured in place with elastic band. Covered with ribbons

Step 10- Added toys to the outside as decorations. I scured these in place by tying them with ribbon to the ribbons around the cake. I wanted to be careful that none of the diapers were damaged.

Step 11- wrapped the gift in clear cellophane and decorated with remaining ribbons. (the cellophane mainly is to keep the gift clean as well as for presentation)

As a home-made gift, this really was easy to make. Took around an hour to make from start to finish.

I found lots of different ideas for making diaper cakes/nappy cakes on the net. SOme just used nappies and ribbons and others had lotions, toys, bottles or baby clothing included.

These make a great centrepiece for your table at a baby shower. Easily made in advance and become a talking point for guests who maybe haven't met before.

Thanks icon_smile.gif Does make a great gift....and you know that it will all be used.....you can't ever have too many nappies icon_lol.gif

I forgot to mention also that we printed off some quotes/sayings about babies and mothers......folded them ans placed into around half of the nappies. I think they will be a nice surprise
