    That's a great idea. I have some jars that have rough edges on the top and can't be used for canning any longer.
    Instead of taking them to the city to recycle...I'll use them myself.
    I hate that last late frost...bummer...we spread old quilts on top and put buckets on larger plants. But in my smaller herb garden and for my tiny stuff....that is a brilliant idea!
    Thanks! When I was a kid we used to put lightning bugs in them! Really cool fun! icon_wink.gif

    I don't see why not...I found this image of one made of glass discs, which don't look a whole lot different from canning lids:

    I agree that you can reuse the canning lids provided you have carefully opened so they are not bent even slightly. Also look to be sure they are still in perfect condition on the underside i.e. no tiny rust spots starting, etc. I can alot and I reuse the perfect lids on a regular basis, just sterilize them of course.

    The sealing compound on the lids is intended for one-time use only.

    According to the National Center for Home Food Preservation:
    "Lids should not be used a second time since the sealing compound becomes indented by the first use, preventing another airtight seal. Screw bands may be reused unless they are badly rusted or the top edge is pried up which would prevent a proper seal."

    I just found this thread, it is an older one, I know! I reuse my jar lids on jars that I store nuts, flours, that sort of thing in.I don't think I'd use them for canning again. icon_smile.gif

    I use my used lids to cover jars that are storing dehydrated foods. Toss an oxygen absorber in there and they really will seal again. and again, and again!
