I almost never buy prepared herring from the grocery store, as I find it to be too vinegary and not appealing - salt herring fillets for me, thank you very much.
But I did try the Blue Hill Bay herring in wine marinade at Costco, and I have to say, it was quite excellent. I've bought more. It's under $5 for a big jar.
I will still be buying the salt herring fillets at my local Polish deli to make traditional Lithuanian dishes, but wanted to share this find with my Eastern European compatriots.

How long can you keep this in the refrigerator? I thought the Costco one is very good too but it's a big jar and it's only me eating this. I kept it for 2 weeks and decided to toss it because I did not know. If I can keep it longer I would love to got buy it again. Great with pickled beets and eggs.

Things that are pickled or in vinegar or have vinegar I keep in until at least their sell-by date. Mayonnaise, for example, you can keep until its sellby date no matter how long it's been open. My last jar has been open for a month at least, as right now I'm the only one eating it, and no problems.

Well, that's why I really like to make my own. I buy the salt herring from one of the delis, and then soak it at least 24 hrs, longer if I can, changing the water several times. Then I make some kind of herring salad, usually
Lithuanian Herring Salad With Onion and Tomato (Silke Su Pomidor but sometimes this for a change,
Herring Salad With Apple and Potatoes (Silke Su Obuoliu Ir Bulve . The herring is very mild, not fishy, because of the soaking. I soak to get rid of a lot of the salt, which I cannot have in abundance.
