I've never been lacking in imagination when it comes to preparing food for children - but this is a whole new level!

Reading the local paper yesterday, I came across an article featuring a man who had started creating fun & healthy sandwiches to encourage his young son to eat all of his lunch. So many people were fascinated by his designs that he even launched a website!

Take a look at some of his creations:

    Ben 10

A white bread sandwich, decorated with thin pieces of cucumber to make the Ben 10 emblem. I'd imagine you could use any not too chunky filling here.

    Hello Kitty

A white bread sandwich, decorated with thin pieces of cucumber, ham, tomato & cheese & 1/2 a cherry tomato. Any smooth filling could be used such as ham, cheese or a spread.

    Nemo

White bread sandwich, decorated with thin pieces of carrot & cucumber. The plate is decorated with small rounds of cucumber & a few salad leaves. Any smooth / flat filling would be suitable.

    Sid (From Ice Age)

White bread sandwich, decorated with thin pieces of cucumber, cheese & the crust (or you can use wholemeal bread). A very flat / smooth filling would be needed here such as ham or cheese slices or a spread.

    Sponge Bob

White bread sandwich, decorated with thin slices of cucumber, cheese, tomato, crusts (or wholemeal bread) & cocktail sausages. Any not too chunky filling is suitable.

    Pac Man

Two small white bread sandwiches, decorated with thinly sliced cucumber & a halved black olive. Sliced cocktail sausage or pickle to decorate the plate. Any flat / smooth filling would be suitable.

    Charlie (From Charlie & Lola)

A white bread sandwich, decorated with thin slices of cheese & strips of cucumber. Any not too chunky filling would be suitable.

    Lola (From Charlie & Lola)

A white bread sandwich, decorated with thin slices of cheese & strips of cucumber. Any not too chunky filling would be suitable. (Not sure about the hair clips - maybe a thin slice of bread brushed with a little blue food colouring).

    Sheep

A wholemeal sandwich, decorated with thin slices of cucumber & white bread. Any filling is suitable.

    Dragon

A white bread ham (you could also use cheese) sandwich, decorated with thin slices of cucumber & cheese. The fire is made from thinly sliced ham & tomato. (You could also use roasted red pepper or carrot).

    Pig

A white bread (you could also use wholemeal bread to make a brown pig) sandwich, decorated with thin slices of cucumber & ham. Any not too chunky filling would be suitable.

    Giraffe

A white bread sandwich, decorated with thin slices of cucumber, white bread & crusts (or wholemeal bread). Any not too chucnky filling would be suitable.

    Lion

A white bread sandwhich (could also use wholemeal), decorated with thin slices of cucumber & 2 black olives. A mix of square crisps / chips, thin slices of carrot & cheese have been used to make the mane. Any not too chunky filling would be suitable.

    Crocodile

A white bread ham sandwich, decorated with slices of cucumber & and 2 small meatballs for the eyes (you could also uses olives, the end of cocktail sausages etc). Salad leaves & crumbled crackers have been added to the plate (you could use sliced chicken etc in place of the crackers).

    Mouse

A white (or wholemeal) ''finger'' bread roll, decorated with thin slices of cucumber, ham & tomato. Pieces of cheese make the mouses feet & an extra chunk for the mouse to nibble on. Any not too chunky filling would be suitable.

    The Loch Ness Monster

Any toasted bagel, 3 into 3 & decorated with sliced cucumber. You can use any speadable filling here such as cream cheese or tuna mayo etc.

    Caterpillar

6 mini white bread (can use wholewheat, granary etc)sandwiches (use small round cookie cutter or rim of glass to cut). A tomato, sliced cucumber & radish are used to make the head. Chunks of cucumber make the feet, a few salad leaves also decorate the plate. Any flat / smooth filling would be suitable.

    Flowers

2 medium round sandwiches - 1 white bread & 1 wholemeal. Decorated with curled, thinly sliced tomato (can use red pepper etc) & small rounds of ham (can use cheese, cucumber, olive etc). Chives & thinly sliced cucumber make the grass & stems. A flat / smooth filling would be best suited to these.

    Grand Piano

A white bread ham sandwich, decorated with a carrot stick, finely sliced cucumber & cheese. Small pieces of cucumber make the piano feet.

    Confused.com

An open-faced white bread ham sandwich, decorated with sliced cucumber. The arms are made from more white bread & thinly sliced cucumber. The hair is also thin slices of cucumber.

    Space Rocket

A white bread ham sandwich, top slice has small square hold cut out. A cocktail sausage cut in half makes the boosters. Small thin slices of cheese form stars & a slice of cucumber with 1/2 slice of cucumber rind forming a planet. (You could also use thinly sliced carrot or red pepper to make flames from the boosters).

    Robot

A white (or wholemeal) ''finger'' bread roll with a thin layer sliced off the top, decorated with small, thin slices of ham, cheese, cucumber & tomato (or pepper etc). Slices of cucumber make the arms & legs. Cubes of cheese, attached with cocktail sticks make the antenae / boppers on the robots head. Any filling would be suitable.

    Pirate Ship

A white bread ham sandwich (can also be done with sliced cheese), with 3 small round holes cut out of the top slice. Halved slices of cucumber form the sea. The mast & sail are made with a halved breadstick & a slice of ham (could use cheese slice). Skull & Crossbones flag made with sliced cheese & ham.

I am to the point of feeling guilty as my daughter eats so many pb&j sandwiches along with carrot sticks/ranch dressing and apple slices. She doesn't complain but, with a few exceptions, we don't deviate from this "menu."

This gives me some inspiration!! I may not have time for a grand piano but I think we can get a little creative. What a great post. Thank you!!
