German-themed food bon voyage party suggestions!

    Fri Jun 19, 2009 12:47 pm Groupie
My close girlfriend/my partner-in-crime at work just found out her husband, who is a federal govt contract supervisor for the US Army, has been accepted into a 3year transfer program to Kaiserslautern, Germany! I am so sad, yet so excited for her and her family needless to say.
That said- I'd love to throw her a german-themed going away celebration here at work and was thinking maybe a dessert/breakfast sweets/drinks theme instead of just a cake....any ideas from you guys? I'm looking for the utmost in authenticity as besides having a little german blood in her, she doesn't have much of any experience in german food. Thanks for your suggestions ahead of time! icon_biggrin.gif

For a breakfast theme, maybe you could serve an assortment of breads ie brötchen (crusty buns), rye bread, etc along with jams, butter, cheeses, cold meats.
    Also strudels & coffee cakes.

    Here are a few possibilities:
    Butter Cream-Filled Cake
Baby Tarts of Blue Cheese (German and Vegetarian)
    Red River Pumpernickel Bread
    Delicious German Rye Bread
Zwiebelkuchen ( Southwest German Onion Cake)

Wow- thanks, that's a great idea....I thought I was pretty limited as far as prepared foods that would allow me to join the party too, but doing the breads and meats would be delish too!
