Orange Extract - for Your Homemade Baking Gift Baskets! by Kerfuffle-Upon-Wincle

From ehow.com — Homemade orange extract using peel from navel oranges, vodka, water, and about a week to steep! Substitute lemons or limes for a different flavor — Place in small bottles for gift giving!

    Ingredients
1 large clean navel orange (peeled, no white pith!)
    1/4 cup boiling water
    1/2 cup vodka

After thoroughly washing a large navel orange with soap to remove all pesticides, dirt, and germs, carefully remove the peel without disturbing the white pith! Chop peel finely in food processor ~ Place chopped peel into a sterile jar and top with boiling water and vodka.

Cool to room temperature and store covered in the cupboard for 3-7 days before using as orange flavoring.

After a week, strain into small sterile bottles. For gift giving, tie each bottle with ribbon and a tag marked "orange extract".

The bottles need to have a seal of some kind? Where do you find your bottles at?

Thanks Katie for posting the recipe and photos ~ and what a nice banner!

The bottles were purchased at Old Time Pottery(?) or Garden Ridge(?) by my daughter a few years ago ~ she had stored them in the very top cupboard at my house because she has no storage space in her condo! The bottles have a rubber seal, but bottles or little spice jars with screw-on lids would also work ~

I need to find uses for lots of other stuff my daughter left at my house ~ icon_razz.gif

Thank you KUW! I think that is a daughter thing to do, I always run things over to my mom's and my DD will bring things here. icon_smile.gif
