Chopped onion in fridge-how long is it good?

We have tried both the onion keeper and tomato keeper and found neither one made a difference for us. Both wound up in the trash (to avoid cluttering up our tiny kitchen).

I know that rubbing your hands on wet stainless steel can remove onion-y odors, but I don't know if steel will attract those odorous compounds out of the air.

What works for me is that I can LOCATE the darned piece of onion, rather than have it get lost in a veggie drawer in a baggie. Much easier to find, and they stack, too. I have no opinion on the odor, but it is a tighter seal,too, so you don't run the risk of stinking up the fridge. Tomatoes I NEVER put in the fridge, cut or whole, as it kills their flavor.

Just after we got married(43 years ago) I purchased a white round Tupperware container, large enough to hold a med/large (not huge) onion. That is the only item that has ever been in there. To this day I just don't have to hunt for my onion and for the most part it keeps it pretty fresh for quite awhile. In the 50 years of cooking I have never gotten ill from using an onion that was cleaned and stored in the refg. .
I do agree with Zeldaz about tomatoes, refrigerating tomatoes is a "sin" for getting the best flavor and texture out of therm. IF it is a matter of having to throw it away before I can use it then I will refrigerate it but then only try and use it in cooking.
I know some that bring them home and immediately put them in the fridge, I just cringe when I see them do that.

I have printed out and copied articles telling of why not to put tomatoes in the fridge, yet no matter what I say or show to them, in the fridge they go, and the same goes with potatoes and onions (the onions not cleaned yet). I just gave up trying...

I'm really annoyed that the supermarkets have started putting their loose potatoes in the chilled section. They look at me like I'm nuts.

OMG It's like you read my mind. I feel the same way, and to think they are suppose to be experts on fruits and veggies.
How many times I have wanted to open up a bag from the potato section and pick what I want that haven't been chilled, but of course I don't. Just think, I thought it was only the supermarket in our area that did that. Oh my.
