    What to serve with falafel?

    My two daughters, ages 9 and 12, have recently discovered the wonderfulness of falafel at a local restaurant. So I said I would make some for dinner this week.

    I'm going to do it the easy way this first time and use a boxed mix for the falafel. I'll serve them in warmed pita bread with yogurt/cucumber dressing.

    Questions: should I also put lettuce and/or tomato in the pita?

    And what should I serve with this meal? A rice dish? What sort of vegetable or salad is a good match?

    Hi there,

    falafel tends to be eaten as a snack food / light lunch. Usually we eat it with plenty of salad in the pita bread.

    You could put it with anything I suppose icon_razz.gif Fries - oven baked or otherwise would go with falafel, as would a simple savoury rice dish.

    The following are also good:

    Kolokythakia Tiganita - Greek Battered Fried Zucchini / Courgett

    Mekleh Salata - Cauliflower Salad (Middle Eastern)

    In our house we eat the falafel sandwich in the same way you might serve a cheeseburger, with fries or chips and a soft drink. Some of my kids arent real fans of the traditional tahini sauce and prefer to use ranch dressing as the condiment in this sandwich.

    I have real trouble keeping my felafels together when they are cooking, they seem to disintegrate on me. Any ideas why?

    I had that problem the first few times too. I found that my oil was not hot enough. I usually make falafels once a month in large quantity and store it in the freezer and thaw it slightly just before cooking. I dont know if it is the combination of the freezing and oil temp that is working for me, but if I do it fresh I always add 1/2 cup bread crumbs to the mix.
