    What to eat after stomach flu?

    I have 3 kids under 5 that have just had stomach flu. They are hungry but I would like to make sure I don't irritate thier little bellies. What can I feed them for the next few days? I gave them bread and mashed potatoes for dinner tonight-I know, not nutritionally sound but its what I could think of. I was thinking maybe some chicken and rice soup for dinner tomorrow but what about lunches and dinner for the next few days. I was thinking about pancakes for breakfast and/or Cheerios.
    I would appreciate any suggestions. TIA icon_smile.gif

    Hi there,

    I would say anything that's light on their stomachs.

    Mashed potatoes was a great start! You want to avoid acidic foods like tomatoes (especially pasta sauce or ketchup). Plain noodles, pasta or rice in chicken broth would be good.

    Avoid meats for a couple of days & then introduce it in a way that won't shock their systems - a little ground chicken or beef in a meal would be enough to start.

    Fibrous fruits & veggies can irritate them. Really well (long!) cooked carrot should be OK.

    Eggs are OK but I have to say I could never look at an egg when I'd just had stomach flu!

    A little instant oatmeal (or pulse your regular oats in a processor for a minute before cooking), pancakes or cereal should be OK.

    Bananas, applesauce, poached pears, jello, tinned peaches etc are all nice desserts.

    I think dairy is best kept to a minimum for a few days too.

    I think the key is just to let them eat a little but often & top them up with plenty of drinks.

    Actually, I think a little cheese would be good for them. I've always been able to eat it when my stomach was unsettled. Soup is also a very good idea.
    I'd hold off on the Cheerios and milk, though. Cheerios are a little too high in fiber, and could be irritating. Same with oatmeal.

    Whatever you give them, just give them a little at a time. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to find out how it will affect them.

    Thanks for the ideas. I got the stomach flu right after them so I'll be using these suggestions for me too. I guess its a little easier with me because I know what sounds good and what sounds atrocious.

    Plain white rice is soothing. Then if that is o.k. rice with some melted mild cheese on top. Bananas are also good. Good Luck. The only thing worse than having the flu bug yourself is; little kids with it. Yuck! Been there, done that!

    I can answer this as I am just recovering from this bug. I made the mistake yesterday after I started to feel well to eat a salad..I got relapse for 12 hours of more violent bms..
    what i have been eating now seems good
    scrambled eggs, ate some boiled chicken, just had slice of banana bread,
    yogurt for the cultures. I did have some progresso soup before I ate the salad yesterday the slow cooked vegetable beef and that hit fine. but stay away from mexican and salads!!! and ranch dressing. all of which I love but not when getting over this affliction

    I know the original poster has long since recovered from the flu, since the question was raised in 2009! But for anyone else interested in the same information, let me share what was told to me by my mother, a nurse.

    Go with the B-R-A-T diet after any kind of stomach upset, like the flu. This acronym stands for bananas, rice [plain, not seasoned], applesauce [again, plain] and toast [unbuttered, or lightly buttered]. These foods are mild, easily digested, and add bulk to the bowel to firm up loose stools.

    I hope this helps anyone in a similar situation. I know it has served my family well over the years.

    Yogurt with a probiotic is really good. After the flu, your stomach has gotten rid of its good bacteria, and you need to replace it. This has helped both my kids and myself in the past.

    I always thought rice and chicken soup was nice served in a bread bowl or instead of rice you could use short noodles like vermicelli or that rice shaped pasta (I forgot what it's called).

    Egg drop soup is very soothing and nourishing too. and it's simple to make

    well i have the stomach flu right now it does not feel good i have been eating bacon to help my stomach without puking you should also drink water, Gatorade,and sprite. icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

    Perfect timing-my 16 year old son is getting over the stomach virus, have fed him applesauce, saltines, yogurt, banana, toast, and homemade chicken soup with noodles with steamed rice. I may try pancakes for dinner.

    After a stomach I think its better that you should eat porridge or any kind of soup and then eat fruits since it can help to bring back the nutrients that has been flushed away in your body.

    I really think that pancakes are a bad idea. Personally I suggest avoiding dairy and gluten for a few days as they are hard on the digestive system. Try Rice Crispies or Rice Chex with no or rice milk. Look for ginger chews or ginger candy to relieve nausea. Try having your kids sleep propped up on a pillow. Try the b.r.a.g. diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, ginger)
    Note: taken from brat diet replaced toast with ginger
    Also try Rice cakes with Applesauce on top
    Try making pedialite popsicles
    Recipe:

    1 quart water
    2 tablespoons sugar
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    Try mixing with apple juice, a healthy drink mix, or flat ginger ale

    Note: Do not put cinnamon sugar on toast. When I was 4-5 I had my mother do it and couldn't keep anything down for a week(easter sunday fell in there, that was torture) they almost had to take me to the hospital!!!!!
