FWIW, I found that smoking longer than a week while taking the Chantix was the magic formula for me. I smoked for about three weeks while on it. I went from two packs a day to two cigarettes, neither of which I smoked all the way down.

My husband smoked for about a month on Chantix and kicked a 40+ year habit. At the end, he would light up, take one drag, and toss it.

This can be done. You guys go!

I want to stop smoking. There is a few very nice people here on Zaar that want to see me quit, err I mean stop. Leggy Peggy mentioned in another thread that she STOPPED a couple years ago, she said she is not a quitter, so she said stopped. I think that is a good term for it, to try and stop.

I know there was a support thread called Quitters, that was about this same thing, I don't know what happened to it but let's do it again!

This is MY plan, to go to the Doctor, get a script for Chantix and maybe even order the book Allen Carr's Easy way to Stop Smoking.

I have tried the patches beforen they do help, I would also carry around those little lolypops, called Dum Dums, it gave my mouth and hands something to do while not smoking, it helped along with the patches.

But I still smoke. So I am going to try the pill this time.

ejmatl, suzycrue, Deely, Terese, I am ready to STOP!!!!!!!!!! Are ya'll still in?!!

Quincy, I won't pester you about it, but you are more than welcome to come and join in to, we all need to stop smoking! We all need support doing it as well. Please join us!

Velvetinenut, THANK YOU! For getting on my butt to stop, you are so sweet! I've been wanting to for a long time, have tried several times. Bella, sweety, thank you for encouraging this!

Patches work for some and not for others. I tried them a few years back.
They made me physically ill and craving a smoke. Go figure?

    P.S. for Chip
You should edit your first post in this thread to make it a sticky
so it stays at the top of CC, and is easy to find.
Just click on 'edit' under the post. Then under the dialogue box is a place to tick 'sticky'.

Well I went to the Doc today, he checked my blood pressure and listened to my breathing and said Yep, I will write you a script and did!!! YAY! I have been smoking for 27+ years and now up to 2 1/2 pasks a day, I bet all he heard was wheezing and squeeking icon_lol.gif I tried not to cough into his stethascope! icon_smile.gif

Thanks everyone for your support, it is really going to help, tough road ahead but I got on my hiking boots. I will get the script filled this Friday!

Suzy, Deely, Terese - YAY! ejmatl, I sure hope your asthma gets better soon!

Shani, come on sweety, you are still very young, the longer you smoke the harder it is going to be to stop! Richard-NYC, come on dude, we need you too! I won't pester ya'll about it, I get pestered continuosly by family and friends, I know it doesn't help and can get irritating and it really does no good at all unless YOU are ready to do it. So.........I would love to have ya'll join in but, no pressure.

Leggy Peggy, I can't make this a sticky, I can ask Kathy if she will, lets see how it goes.

And again, to all the rest of you stoppers and non smokers, thank you for your support and suggestions, it makes me feel good ya'll care icon_smile.gif

My doctor was trying to get me to quit, but I just ignored him. In August of 2007, he handed me a prescription for Chantix and it insulted me. Just the thought of him thinking I needed help quitting made me mad. I didn't get the prescription filled and I haven't had nor wanted a cigarette since August 13, 2007.

You are a wimp if you can't quit!

Oh, now that really tics me off, I'll show you!!!!!!!

I wish you all the best!!! Your bodies will thank you!! : )

I so much want my 25 yr old to stop. I know he wants to, but just keeps putting it off. I've never smoked myself and it just breaks my heart to see what he is putting his body through.

I think I will send him a link to this thread and maybe he will join you ~ but I have a feeling it is just wishful thinking on my part.

Now I'm wishing I had shares in Allen Carr.
    But seriously, the book helps.
Terese mentioned earlier that it talks about our fear of stopping. So true.
Our library had copies, so check that out. Or ask friends if they have one.
I'm sure there are plenty of copies are OUT there.

Off to walk those dogs again -- up that mountain.
And a wave.gif just for you Richard!

I just wanted to say I'm "rooting" for all of you icon_lol.gif
I smoked for 30 years (yes, I started very young icon_lol.gif ) and am happy to say I've been smoke-free for 5 years this past February. It took two times before I was successful. I used Zyban (Wellbutrin and the second time I used both Zyban and the patch).

No matter what you use you will have nicotine cravings for a while - this is when you have to draw upon every ounce of strength and willpower that you can muster. Always keep the phrase "this craving will pass" first and foremost in your mind. When a craving hits get up and go do something - it will take your mind off of it. There were times the nicotine cravings were so bad and overwhelming that I would just break down and cry, but I kept telling myself it will get easier and it most certainly did. The first few days after I quit cigarettes consumed my every waking thought and I'm not exaggerating but just don't give up. I had to give up coffee because it would make me want a cigarette. I can now drink coffee, but it took a while. What ever habits you associate with smoking needs to be changed (at least temporarily). I know you guys can do it - stay strong!!!!!

    Good luck!
