It's a dull dreary windy day on the North Wet Coast of North America. (Pun intended!! icon_smile.gif )
I know that I want French Onion Soup..(Rob Feenie's recipe.. I've been craving it!), but I know my Gringomuyloco is gonna want more than soup... he's a real meat and potatoes kinda guy.
I welcome any ideas / suggestions to what I should serve along side. Freezer is well stocked with various cuts of chicken, pork, and beef, unfortunately no seafood.

    Thanks,
    Gringamuyloca

I usually just do a fresh green salad, but I know how meat and potatoes men can be. icon_smile.gif

I think beef might be overload since French Onion soup is usually made with beef broth, so I'd go with chicken. Perhaps grilled, with your favorite marinade or spice blend, and made into a lovely little sandwich on some buttery garlic bread? Soup and sandwich is such a classic comfort combo. You can do a salad, too, of course.

I think that's a great idea! And then you could dip them into the soup, too! icon_wink.gif icon_biggrin.gif

For some reason when I serve French Onion soup I always have tuna or chicken salad. Something about the taste together.

Why didn't I think of that? icon_confused.gif However, I forgot about the wine and for dessert - some fresh fruit with ice cream! icon_wink.gif

Carolyn and Emmie brought up neat points, too, and got me thinking! icon_biggrin.gif Does French Onion Soup have to be made with beef broth? I'm bettin' not! icon_biggrin.gif Gosh, I bet you could make it with chicken broth! Or heck, even go vegetarian and use vegetable broth! Sandwiches and salads are always a wonderful accompaniment (did I spell that right? icon_confused.gif icon_lol.gif ) with any soup! icon_biggrin.gif And using different broths could really expand what you want to serve it with! icon_biggrin.gif A chicken, fish or vegetable sandwich would really go well! icon_biggrin.gif Be it a sandwich, hoagie, panini, wrap, the sky's the limit! Not to mention all KINDS of salads! icon_biggrin.gif Great ideas guys! icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, me too.........waiting to see what Rob's recipe is. Funny, my daughter asked me tonight when I was going to make onion soup again.........I would really like to try another recipe and be adventurous.......Ha. Donna
But with this soup.........I can't think of anything BUT the soup. It, to me, is the whole meal. I think the sandwich idea is the best.........and I would make one for your DH and eat the extra soup myself..... icon_redface.gif !!

So glad this question was asked, I was thinking about it this morning. My husband adores french onion soup but can't just have soup/salad for dinner. (That drives me crazy.) This sandwich sounds outstanding - must try soon!

I guess I'm basically a purist. I cannot imagine French Onion Soup made with anything BUT beef broth.
    HOWEVER:
Give me a bowl of homemade French Onion Soup topped with a thick slice of toasted French Baquette topped with shredded Gruyere all broiled to melty goodness!
Sided with a great grilled cheese(Seriously Sharp Cheddar cheese by Cabot) sandwich to which I have added tomatoes slices, sliced cooked chicken, and a touch of Dijon(gotta keep it "french") mustard!!! Y-U-M!!!!!

I love to make my french onion soup with 1/2 beef and 1/2 chicken broth.
We do not eat much beef but love a cooked chicken breast with fresh bread on the side.

I usually have french onion as part of a starter menu night. We'll have potato skins, stuffed mushrooms and the soup. Or bruschetta, escargot and the soup.
