Old Bay Seasoning now sold in canada!!!!!

2 days after I recieved a large box of OBS from a swap partner, i walked into my local IGA and what was sitting next to the tempura batter for shrimp and breadcrumbs for fish? Old bay seasoning!!!!!

So those who have wanted to try it, or recipes with the real thing, it is available at least in IGA stores.

Okay call me dumb but I have never used Old Bay Seasoning. Have heard talk of it but if either of you could tell me what it contains and where I would use it then maybe I would try it? Sounds like I am missing out on something terrific!

I looked for Old Bay seasoning at Glen's Market when I was in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, but they didn't carry it. I think it's only available in some areas.

Old Bay is available here in the Zellers stores really good prices too in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario..

You see it in a lot of "southern" recipes ........... especially seafood & chicken. Its fairly spicey - depends on your taste, of course

Some stores carry it ......... others don't. I looked in 3 different ones in the same area

Thats probably why I haven't come upon it! I don't do very many hot spicy foods....love different spices but not the heat. I am sure Paul would enjoy it.

Its great in the water with boiled shrimp and dishes like that. there are recipes here to make your own, but i love the real thing and of course its so much easier when suddenly a recipe calls for it.

Hi Neighbors to the North! I found this post while trying to find out if your Thanksgiving differs from ours. Or if you have some traditional dishes that are unique to Canada? When I saw the posting about Old Bay I just had to see what was being said. I live in Maryland where Old Bay Seasoning is made and used extensively. Just thought you all might be interested in checking out the webpage that offers recipes using OBS: http://www.mccormick.com/content.cfm?ID=9263. While there are other seasoning mixes and recipes to make your own, they are not as good. There is a secret ingredient that is proprietary to OBS and while the others are close - they just aren't as good. Try it on french fries instead of salt - especially if you like vinegar with your fries.

Here is a home made version of the Old Bay Seasoning that really does the job as the taste is really close to the original...

OLD BAY SEASONING MIX

1 T. celery seed
1 T. whole black peppercorns
6 bay leaves
1/2 tsp. whole cardamom
1/2 tsp. mustard seed
4 whole cloves
1 tsp. sweet Hungarian paprika
1/4 tsp. mace
salt to taste

In a spice grinder or small food processor, combine all of the ingredients. Grind well and store in a small glass jar.
