    Oh, I can definitely understand your language/accent troubles. Even I (who speaks German as a mother tongue) have problems understanding some of the people in the Ruhrgebiet or Bavaria. Its like they were speaking some completely different language. But well, most of them do speak some sort of high German so whenever Im completely lost I just smile and ask them politely if they could repeat it in a less accent rich speak. icon_wink.gif
    Maybe you've said it already, but if it's not rude, I'd luv to know how come you're in Germany now. When did you move here? Do you find settling in alright? I truly hope you like it here!

    No, I don't mind you asking. My husband is German so I moved here to be with him. We met in a language school in France, and that is why I spoke almost no German at first. It is coming a lot faster that I am living here full time, I was studying in the UK so I was only here part time until September.

    I like it here, in some ways it is easier to deal with being here than it was the UK, even with the language issues. People here are generally nice. Now that I am here all the time I have been able to make my own friends and so on. I am still getting used to some things, but that will come with time. I feel more at home here than I do most places, including where I grew up, I always have cultural shock when I go to see my family. icon_smile.gif

    Newbie "Fry Cook" Poster
    I am on an extended visit in Bonn, Germany assisting my daughter with her 4 1/2, almost 3 and 2 month old children.
    I got to this site because I was looking for information about eating uncooked schinkenwurst which the toddlers love. There is a note on it saying to cook it in the oven but they hate it that way. I want to know if it is safe to eat it as a cold cut.

    Hi. If it's the bologna type of Schinkenwurst you're talking about, it should be fine eaten as a cold cut since it's already cooked. I've never heard of heating it, actually. What exactly does it say on the package?

    My German is rudimentary and I am not there right now but will be returning on Sunday. I am pretty sure it said to heat in oven for 5-10 minutes before eating. Since then my daughter asked a neighbor and she says it is safe to eat it uncooked. thanks for replying.
    My daughter also said that today she found a brand that says nothing about heating.

    I'm in Germany, NRW, tucked between the Ruhrgebiet and the Dutch border. Maybe I'm not the best adress to ask about typical German food because my dad was from Romania and my mother didn't cook a lot of typical German dishes. But my German grandfather used to be a confectioner, so I know something about German cakes, tarts, chocolates etc icon_lol.gif
