I will always have fond memories of the WalMart line. As I was standing in line for Katrina my then boyfriend (we are married now and discussing it then) calls to tell me that he is putting the motorcycle in the back of the truck and driving to his parents in TX. I in my panic induced, WalMart frazzled mind snapped. I started to yell at him that if he thought he was packing up and taking the bike out of there and leaving me and my three year old daughter to fend for ourselves then he didn't need to bother calling me when he got back since I could see where his priorities were. I am fairly certain there were a few other choice words in there too. The guy in line behind me was laughing hysterically, the women in front of me looked at me like I had lost my mind, and yet for some unknown reason this man married me anyway. Needless to say, he pointed out that had I let him finished he would have told me that he was going to demand we come with him.

We never made it that far thanks to the Air Force. We ended up riding out the storm in a shelter with him. I learned this, military shelters are better than public shelters, but they still suck majorly and I don't recommend either. We are both agreed in the future we are just hauling rear end out of town.

I come from a long line of preppers. (parents-grandparents)
I just happened on the forum looking around the site.
I have been prepping all my married life (40) yrs.
We have tornado's-snow- ice storms- floods in my area. And a few earthquakes but mild one's so far.
I can veggies from my garden-meat- and anything I get my hands on.I have 4 children and 9 grandkids and if there is an emergency then they will be here. So that means I have 19 people to feed.
I would tell new people to prepping to start slow and don't get in a panic. Buy extra can good of what you eat. Each week take 5-10$ of grocery money and buy extra to put a side. (Its still there if you need to use it). Check out resale shops/garage sales/estate sale for prep idems you can get cast iron cook ware-propane cookers-canning supplies very cheap. Make your own bug out bags and stock with food you like. And know how to use the idems you get.

Have lurked for some time but have decided to become actively involved.

Was raised to conserve, can, freeze, make do by my parents and extended family.

We have been working on stocking up for some time but have really kicked into high gear in the last couple of weeks. The economy in this area has tanked. I figure about 2 of every 5 people have lost their jobs.

Now we have had weeks of rain, flooding, washed out roads, bridges and railroads. Farmers from Ohio to Nebraska are losing crops. Gas prices continue to rise. I am anticipating that by harvest food prices will double. The Mississippi will be shut along a 200 -250 mile stretch. No barge traffic for an undetermined amount of time. That means no coal for power plants, no grain being shipped. That alone will cause tremendous ripples through the economy.

Also independent and small trucking firms are going out of business by the dozens. It isn't just the price of diesel, there are other reasons, too. Think of the fact that everything in stores is brought in by truckers, not the large companies, the little guys....

Then there are the issues of clean water, energy.... consider the ultimate effect of the massive insurance claims that will be forthcoming. Policy holders will foot the bill for that due to rising premiums.

We are in trouble and we need to start appreciating how much we have had and how much we have wasted.

Getting the males in this house to pull their heads out of a dark place has been difficult. The two adolescents have no clue about how much effort it would take to produce all their food. They are more concerned about talking on cell phones, skateboarding, socializing and playing video games. They have taken everything for granted but they will be getting a wake-up call and it won't bee too long in their future...

( icon_redface.gif that was something of a rant, wasn't it?)

Welcome Queen Dragon Mom. There is a lot of truth to what you say. Our children really don't appreciate YET the value of money yet and how it plays in the bigger picture.

Been pretty crazy around here, lately.
Glad to be here for sure. If folks didn't already know, I'm rather opinionated. icon_wink.gif

I can make soap, though. Really!
