    We lived in germany 89-93 there was a restaruant in the town of Speicher (just outside Spangdahlum AB) that had the greatest garlic and butter schnitzel, the cook was called Annie, older german woman. We would wait 2 hours for the main course but it was sooo well worth the wait. Does anyone out there know how to make it? Please help

    I don't know how to make it I was just wondering about the town of Speicher. I actually wanted to go visit it someday. Seeing as how my family started it I thought it might be a great experience. It sounds like a wonderful place.

    Oh my gosh!
    I loved Annie's, we went there MANY times while stationed at Bitburg & Spang both.

    Unfortunately I don't know how to make the butter schnitzel BUT can try to find out.
    My daughter's best friend is German & visits us yrly.
    Also sends us kindereggs & other goodies for the holidays....YUM
    I'll ask her & see if she can get me a recipe.

    Nice to meet someone who also appreciates the wonderful German food & culture.

    My husband is stopping this afternoon at the German deli in town to pick up some schnitzel. I know that I should fry it but what do you serve it with? Do I make a gravy? How about sides? Fried potatos, mashed potatos, boiled potatos, sauerkraut or just some steamed veggie like carrots or brussel sprouts?

    Schnitzel is typically served with fries & gravy & a salad.
    The gravy is pretty easy to duplicate using french onion soup (canned condensed) & pkgd brown gravy mix.
    Also, add a bit of beef boulion & a dash of worcesterchire .....
    I don't have the exact recipe, you just have to mess with it, but the thicker & darker.....the closer it is to the original.
    Also, if you've ever made Chicken parmesean.....the breading is VERY much the same for schnitzel.

    Are you talking about this? Jaegersosse (Huntersauce) When you mentioned the sauce name I remembered that I had adopted this recipe, I just haven't had a chance to try it yet.

    I've never seen the "real" recipe before but that sure looks like it could be it.
    I'll make it & see ....

    Thanks. DH didn't make it to the deli but I probably will next week to pick up the meat. I'll try this myself then.

    I was stationed at Spangdahlem from 1982 to 1985. Annie was the bomb!!! I can't tell you how many dinners I had there. I tried the Butter Schnitzel the first time I was there and never ate anything else. I loved that woman! She would go into the back and start hammering and making all kinds of noise while my friends and I enjoyed several Bitburgers. I miss Butter Schnitzel mit champions und salat more than anything else in the world!! I've tried to find the recipe for the last 27 years. I can't tell you how many people have told me that it's easy. Restaurants that have said sure, no problem. It's never right. If you find the recipe you have to give it to me!

    One of my last meals at Spangdahelm AB in 1989 was Annie's. The woman I was with asked her for the recipe but Annie politely refused stating in her broken English that too many restuarants had gone out of business becuase people copied them, so she could not take the risk.

    I have tried making it at home but failed. Have not tried this reicpe but I doubt it will duplicate the schnitzel's buttery texture of the breading after frying. It was rich but not greasy.

    i wonder if she is alive or if the place remains open.

    I lived across the street from Annie for several years
    I would tend bar for her many nights when she was busy
    Butter Schnitzel was always get favorite dish to cook for
    us when we closed . We would sit in her dining room and
    have dinner and talk of the best and worst of things
    I've had Chrustmas lunches with her , where I introduced
    her to Sweet Potato pie. I miss those days

    Hi Molly, that recipe looks very good!

    What an intriguing post. Although I'm sorry to say it I've not tried Annie's butter schnitzel. But, I do have a family favorite recipe for you. Try it and see!

    Wiener Schnitzel

    We like to serve Family Favorite Potato Salad! (German Kartoffelsalat) and Cucumber Salad With Sour Cream and Chives (German Gurkensalat) as sides. But, any sides you and your family enjoys would be equally good. It's just a matter of taste. Am thinking that wild mushrooms,spaetzle or Bavarian dumplings, and Rotkohl would be divine, as well.
