    Kindergarten morning snack idea needed

    My daughter's kindergarten class has a snack each morning and the parents are asked to supply most of them. They ask for "healthy" snacks but it ends up mostly being graham crackers, granola bars, etc. Does anyone have an idea of something I could make at home and take in that would be 1) easy, 2) healthy, at least somewhat 3) not messy and 4) suitable for picky eaters as most 5 years old are?

    The only idea I have is something with fruit, but I don't know what. Thanks!

    Apple slices with fruit dip is always great. For the dip use 8oz. cream cheese, 3/4 cup brown sugar, and 1-2 tsp. vanilla extract. Beat ewith a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.

    I used to take this to girl scouts for a "healthy" snack. You can buy those little paper cups to serve the dip in.

    Baby's Easy Fruit Snacks is easy to make and very good. Once set, it is very firm and you could cut out shapes w/ cookie cutters if you'd like.

    Aquarium Cups or Jello Aquariums

    Apple Smiles
    Fruit Critters with Peanut Butter Yogurt Dip
    April Fools Fooled Ya French Fries
    Go Fish Snack

    having worked in kindergarten for 9 years i would suggest something that is easy for them to eat. For example finger food that is why graham crackers and granola bars are good. how about cream cheese mixed with peanut butter and spread on celery or graham crackers. half sandwiches with crust cut off?? Muffins would be nice or a healthy oatmeal type cookie. they probably only have 10-15 mins for snack and recess so don't get too elaborate. kinders are my favorite grade icon_smile.gif

    Why not try "Kitchen Cupboard" Trail Mix. Start with leftover cereals (Cheerios are great), add in what ever else from the cupboard. "Teddy Grahams", marshmallows, raisins, dried fruit and chocolate chips are great additions. Remember to keep most of the items healthy but add some treats too.

    The kids love this. I love it because it empties those almost finished boxes in the kitchen. Our school is nut-free so it is challenging to find snacks that don't use nuts. Good luck with your search.

    DS is 5 and here are some of the snacks we send:

    raw veggies with ranch dressing in a little tupperware tub.
    cheese sticks
    apple slices with peanut butter spread on them
    celery with cream ch or pb spread on it
    bologna roll ups OR
    ham roll ups (just spread a slice with cream cheese and roll up)
    any fruit, cut and finger size, with a little lemon to keep it from going brown - yogurt to dip in
    flavored yogurt with grapes or strawberries slice into it
    a few crax and slices of cheese
    a cinnoman flax muffin (my recipe Cinnamon Flax Muffins)
    Crackers with peanut butter on them
    Raisins, cheerios, some nuts in a baggie
    A couple handfuls of cereal in a baggie
    Hard boiled egg cut in quarters
    bread cubes with a mild cheese dip

    Thank you all for your replies. I like alot of the ideas with dips, peanut butter, cream cheese, etc., but I am afraid that kind of thing may get too messy in the classroom. And as one person mentioned they only get a short time for this snack. Right now I am leaning towards a trail mix type thing put into those little snack size bags. Kids like little individual things and that would be easy to have ready for the teacher to just hand out, plus clean up would be easy. And I can control how much healthy stuff goes in them! I will keep watching this for more ideas. Thanks again!

    Really?? Is that guaranteed? I had plenty of nutty students in my classrooms over the years. I like the idea of teaching in a nut-free school! (Sorry, I couldn't stop myself -- maybe the teacher was nutty, too!?!)

    Seriously, the apple slices with peanut butter dip was a popular item. Also Rice Krispie treats, in a variety of flavors and with a variety of add-ins. But something that wasn't even thought of when I was teaching was the dessert wrap. Look through all the varieties. Something as simple as apple slices and peanut butter wrapped in a tortilla to more complex ideas like marshmallows and granola wrapped up or bananas and chocolate or -- well as I said, check them out!

    Unfortunately, if you're going to be "nut-free"... peanut butter is also a big "no no."

    My youngest grandson is allergic to peanuts and it's created quite a challenge for ole granny here. It's amazing what is included on labels these days... even candy corn is produced in a plant where peanuts are processed! Hard to find treats to send to the little ones...

    Of course, this impacts the entire family... who cannot enjoy nuts and nut butters around our little guy.

    You are right, Impera Magna. Peanuts and peanut butter are hazardous. Would almond butter be an acceptable substitute? The reason I thought of wraps is that it is an all-in-one type of thing and much less predictable than the usual treat . Each can be individually wrapped, ready to pass out. Many do not even need heating which, of course, would be difficult if not impossible. Trail mix in bags sounds very doable, also. Those little kids will undoubtably love anything they are given!

    According to my DIL, no nuts of any kind are "okay".... Fortunately, Henry isn't so severely allegeric that even smelling nuts is dangerous. If nuts are processed in the same plant as (whatever treat), as long as it's not on the same equipment... he's okay.

    This has been quite an education for me.....

    Teddy Bear Trail Mix

    This one is kid friendly, no nuts.
    We made this often when I worked in a toddler room at a daycare when I was in highschool.
    I loved the idea of different animals in the mix, we made a game out of it naming the animals, shapes and colors!!
    I would add colored marshmallows, gummy animals, gummy shapes, gold fish...
    It was great to have a healthy snack and also have the kiddos learning at the same time!

    Wow this could be really disastrous! I didn't realize that if someone is allergic to nuts it also includes machines that could process nuts and other things. With this information I would go with fresh fruit and vegetables, cut up and in a baggy. Sliced oranges (so they can make a monkey smile) and a box/bag of juice. Oranges have fructose in them and would bring their blood sugar up so they can last the rest of the morning. I would stay away from any process food, as it might be nut free but could be made on a machine that handles nuts YIKES!

    you could buy a pkg of those larger 'medicine' sized cups for each child's individual dip.

    (Rubio's has the perfect size! lol)

    What about celery with cheese spread on it, - it's also good with peanut butter - and raisons (Ant's on a log) although that doesn't sound like something that would work well.

    Cheese and crackers is always fun. You could get salami or something if the kids wanted it. I love Sociables crackers, the different shapes really get kids excited!

    My little sister and brother used to go nuts over apple cinnamon. You just slice up apples and then mix a little sugar with cinnamon and they can dip it. It's a little bit less messy that yoghurt, although I think that's a fantastic idea, too.

    My teacher in the 2nd grade used to have "creative sandwhich" wednesdays. We would make sandwiches at home and bring them in and show them to the class before we ate them. That was a blast for all of us, because you can do so many things, using cookie cutters to make fun shapes, or something. Maybe you could make cheese sandwiches or something like that, using the same principal. Not as healthy as fruit, but an option.

    Granola is great - especially in yoghurt - although I'm not sure what kindergarten kids would think of that!

    It's too bad about the peanut allegies, I know how difficult it can be for some children and their parents, some of these kids only have to breath the peanut oil that gets in the air, and they get sick. I can't imagine not being able to have Thai, as most things are cooked in peanut oil, or have peanuts on top.
    We used to love "monkey rolls", where you'd put peanut butter on bread, put a whole banana lengthwise, roll it up and slice it in to wheels. That was always a hit.
