    Hello everyone! My first post and I have to say thank you to everyone for all of your awesome recipes and ideas!!

    My hubby is from Germany and he asked me to post a request for a bread recipe called St. Martin's Day Bread. It is usually shaped to look like men. Any help would be awesome!

    Howdy and welcome to 'zaar, Sarah. Very nice to meet a new friend.

    Bread can be made in any shape...is there a description of the actual bread? I googled and found that most, if not all, of the St. Martin's Day/Martinmas recipes were goose.

    Molly - Thanks for the google info. I was searching yesterday too and I actually found one recipe called Weckmann that my husband was excited about because apparently that was it! Thanks to all those who helped me find it!

    Yes,

    WECKMANN

    is the typical bread on St. Martin (10. November). Children love this bread shaped like a man (often with a pipe in his arm). It is a traditional bread, but the pipe is a mistake. The figure should be a bishop and the pipe should be his crook . Turn around the pipe and you will have "the original" crook of a bishop icon_biggrin.gif

    There are many other names for this sweet bread, like Stutenkerl, Piepenker, Hefekerl, Printenmann, Hanselmann, Klasenmann (depending on the region). It is based on a sweet yeast dough.

    As I come from the Rhineland in Germany, you might want to try my recipe
    Lower-Rhenish Sweet Buns
    This dough can also be used for Weckmann and is used in our region to form Weckmänner. The addition of cinnamon and nutmeg is typical for this sweet dough. If possible use Baker's yeast. The taste is different to dried yeast. But if not available you can use dry yeast too according to package directions. Omit the raisins, if you like.

    Thank you for the recipe! I am printing it right now so I can give it to my hubby! He is from Koln in the Rhineland! We are heading there with our daughter for Christmas this year. I love the regional recipes - I want to expose my daughter to as much of them as I can!

    From Köln, that's only 30 km from Bonn, where I live. Then your DH will love this buns. It is a very typical bun recipe here. Everyone love these and they are so easy to make.

    I've started to post some more regional recipes and there are some more to come... especially christmas cookies. If you like, ckeck my recipes. All german recipes have a German name. So they are easy to find (and there are not a lot to scroll through) icon_biggrin.gif
