    still searching for Syrian/Lebanese dessert recipe

    I am STILL searching for a dessert recipe that my Gramma used to make. I believe that it was made with Cream of Wheat, or Farina. It was served chilled, dusted with cinnamon, with a walnut half on top. It had the consistancy of a dense pudding dessert that you slice into squares to serve.

    Any ideas?

    elissa, could the dessert you looking for be layali sharm?? It sounds close to what you are looking for. Heres a recipe I make. If you are intrested in it Icould post it.

    1 cup semolina
    4 cups milk
    1/2 cup sugar
    1-3 tsps orange flower water
    2 cans of tinned cream
    1 cup of sugar syrup
    chopped pistachios

    Bring milk and sugar to the boil, add semolina.
    Stir continuously untill it thickens slighly
    do not over cook or you will be eating porriage
    Add flower water stir and remove from heat
    Grease a serving dish with a little sugar syrup
    spoon semolina mixture to the dish . Allow to cool
    Pour cream over and sprinkle pistachios over
    chill and cut into squares.
    Serve with sugar syrup.


    I am sure instead of pistachios, you could sprinkle cinnamon
    and walnuts.

    I think you're referring to layali lubnan...
    Here is one site I found that has the recipe...but if you surf the web...I'm sure you will find one that its fitting. I just wanted to throw the name out there so you would know what it was called...go to http://www.nestle-laziz.com/english/recipes-archive-sweet.asp and click on layali lubnan...

    I'm sorry, as host, that this does not ring a bell for me right now. Yet, although I know very little about trad. Middl-Eastern foods, I do have a recipe somewhere which sounds like the one you want, and I have made it more than once.

    My problem is that my time on the Internet and my time in general is limited. I'll try and find that recipe for you in my tattered scrapbooks!! icon_redface.gif

    the recipes provided by Fifi and Lemoncurd sound very similar with the exception that Fifi's used fruit, and my grandmother's didn't.

    Thank you Ladies! I'm so jazzed! I'm going to try it this weekend, when my folks come over!

    I think that I have the right name...but the recipe may not be the exactly tradional....my MIL made layali lubnan...and this is what it consisted of...
    a layer of a light creamy custard(a cornstarch custard) and a layer of semolina(referred to as smeed) and crushed pistachio;s on top, and a clear sugar syrup over it.

    that has GOT to be it! But holy cow, that would put me into a diabetic coma! icon_lol.gif I'm going to have to explore ways to make with with diabetic friendly ingredients. Thank you so much, Fifi!

    LOL...you could use splenda instead of regular sugar..that will help a bit.

    it will.....but it won't "carmelize" or thicken icon_confused.gif ......going to go ask if anyone in the Diabetic Forum has any suggestions. I REALLY REALLY want to make it this weekend.

    icon_cry.gif The one I know is also really off-limits for diabetics. Too sweet, too much carb. Maybe you'll have to find the real recipe, then tweak it with ingredients which are safe for you. ((( Have a hug))) It's no fun having to do that so often.
