I recently went to a farmers market and there was this lovely couple selling home made cakes. Lots of almond flavoring with sliced almonds on top. It was only about an inch tall and quite dense. Anyone know what I am talking about??

Nut Cake and use almonds instead of walnuts. If you try it, recipe reviews are very much appreciated. Welcome to 'zaar. It's nice to meet a new friend.

This is a Dutch cake instead of German, but I often substitute almond flavoring for the vanilla, and top it with sliced almonds.
It's dense, rich, and buttery, and soooooo good with the almonds.

Have a look at this, if this looks like the cake you're after let me know and I'll translate the recipe for you.
It's what we call a 'Blechkuchen', rather than being baked in a cake tin it's directly baked on the tray that comes with your oven.

Before I translate, can I just add, that the recipe is meassured in cups, which I have never seen in a German recipe and it states that the 'cup-meassurement' refers to a normal cup (one you would drink from, as there is no meassuring cups in Germany) or an empty plastic cream pot, from a 7 fl oz container of cream. That kind of cake is usually quite forgiving, so I guess you won't have any problems even if amounts are not spot on. Let me know if it works and I'll post the recipe properly. So where it says cup in the translation it refers to a normal drinking cup, not a US meassuring cup unless otherwise stated.
Ingredients:
7 fl oz cream
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
3 eggs
1 tbsp baking powder
For the topping:
125 gr melted butter (that equals approx 1/2 US cup)
1 cup sugar
4 oz slivered almonds
3 tbsp milk
Preparation:
In a bowl cream the eggs with the sugar.
In a seperate bowl mix the flour with the baking powder.
Add some flour/baking powder to the egg mixture and mix, then add some of the cream and continue that way until you have a smooth dough.
Spread the dough onto a greased or baking paper lined oven tray (this is just the standard tray that comes with your oven, it doesn't have to be deep).
Bake in a pre-heated oven (200°C/400°F/Gas 6) for 15 minutes.
Meanwhile mix the melted butter, almonds, milk and sugar.
Remove the cake from the oven and evenly brush with the almond butter mixture.
Place back in the oven and continue to bake at the same temperature for another 15 minutes.
Allow to cool and cut into slices.
