This breaks my heart. I wonder how many women are trying to prepare for bird flu on the sly so their husbands won't think they're paranoid. Well, happily, I don't have a husband so I don't have to apologize for being paranoid. (I have a friend who defines paranoia as "perfect awareness.") Anyway, I've sent copies of the book "Stocking Up" on preserving food to my kids and my ex-husband, along with N-95 masks, surgical masks, surgical gloves, etc. Sounds nuts, maybe, but I don't care. I'm doing everything I can to prepare, as well as give a nudge to the people I care about. A starter kit, so to speak. When the top scientists in this country say that they give it a 50-50 chance of happening and have personally stockpiled a three months' supply of food and water, I'm listening.

My DH is having a cow, b/c he's so pesimistic about it, but I, like good old mom, have ALWAYS put food away for a 'rainy day' which really means, poor..

We're entering our six month of no job now.. HARD aint the word for it! Every few days when I hit Super WM, I have picked up another 10 lbs of rice, 6 lbs pintos, peas, white beans to put away. I have huge containers to fill. Additional cost each time: $4-5.
