    I am looking for a German recipe that is made with mashed pinto beans that are sweetened, and it a sweet dough bread with a sweet cream sauce called Bohne Beroggi, or Bonne Beroggi, or Bonna Beroggi. HELP!!!! Can't find it anywhere!!

    it would be "Bohnen.......Piroggen..." and I have never heard of something like that, being from Germany myself Try also in the German cooking forum..... Did you eat them in Germany, or were you told, that it was a german recipe, as that can be very different....Oh, and wellcome to Zaar!!!

    I had this at a small mom and pop German resturant here in Kansas. This is what they called it. Do you know of the recipe?

    Nope, sorry.
    That is what I meant by the "german" recipes sometimes being REALLY different from the recipes in Germany. We do not cook with Pinto beans really, at least not in the traditional german cooking, and I don't know any recipes to help you with very sorry. But here on zaar are tons of great cooks and I'm sure, that you will find it evebtually. Check out the search on the top bar and type in "piroggy" and see, what comes up, and as I said, do to the german forum and post the question there, too!! All the best for your search!

    Though it sounds nice it is not originally German as far as I can say. Txzuckerbaeckerin is right, pinto beans are not traditional in Germany icon_smile.gif

    Come to think of mght be a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe...their language is a variant of German, but their dishes are really quite their own.

    It may be. I know I had it in an Amish/Mennonite area. It was a German resturant, it may also be Swedish. I don't know. I'm sure I could make a good copy of it. It's just a sweet bread dough with sweatened pinto beans in the middle. The sauce is I believe either cream, or half and half with sugar. I just thought it would be nice to have a recipe for it for the exact recipe. It was really different, but really good.

    I don't want to sound smart in hind sight: what I normally do, when I really like something, is, that I simply go and ask the folks in the restaurant
    most of the time, I actually get the recipe, or at least the list of ingredients and some more infos! The worst thing will be a "no"
    I wish you good luck on your quest to find that bean-whatever-it-is-recipe..

    p.s.--I live in Kansas, though not in Mennonite country, and I would love to find the restaurant you're talking about too!

    Hi Kris:)

    After a lot of investigative work, I found this recipe at my local library in a book called The Centennial Treasury of Recipes. It wasn't an easy task to find this recipe, so I thought if someone out there knew what it was and didn't think I was crazy or something because no one had heard of it, I should post it when I found it.

    I had this dish at a little mom and pop restaurant in Moundridge, KS called Country Kitchen. Every Friday and Saturday they serve German food including Verinika and Bohne Beroggi.

    I thought it was kind of an odd dish, and I didn't think I would like it because of the pinto beans, but it was delicious!!

    I hope you can go there sometime, it's really good!!
