Here in Central Texas I buy the avocados cut into halves. Idon't have to worry about them been ripe or not. They are not that expensive to me because Isave extra time not have to peel them. This is what I do I mash them and add a package of Concord Foods Guacamole mix. This package calls for two avocados plus one package of mix. So I buy two packages of avacado. Ibuy this at our H E B grocery store. I've made this for company and its got rave reviews.

I agree with papergoddess. The Florida avacados don't even taste like avacados. You need the Hass or california avacados.
I wouldn't mix it with store-bought. Just make as much from scratch as you can afford. Quality over quantity.

Do you have a “Trader Joe’s” store near you? They have an excellent guacamole. I think each container has 5 avocados, plus no preservatives. You can't beat if for the price.

I'm in Texas too and there's an HEB very close to me....I'll look for the Concord mix today.....thank you so much for your suggestion!

I love guacamole, too. But to make a batch just for myself just is silly sometimes. I have to differ with some of you- there is ONE and ONLY one purchased brand that is good. I live in Dallas and in the refrigerated section they sell a brand called AvoClassic. It is 3.99 for (2) 8 0z packets. Each packet is made with 5 avocados (there are even still chunks in it)

The ingredients listed are as follows:
Hass Avocados, Jalapeno Puree, (white vinegar, jalapeno peppers) dehydrated onion, salt, granulated garlic.

There are no fillers or stretchers. If 10 avocados are used to make this for 3.99 it really is quite reasonable.

There is nothing like a good scratch guacamole however. Cilantro, tomatoes, onions, a slice of lime. YUM. But if the price of fresh avocados is prohibitive in your area then I really think that the AvoClassic could be tweaked with some fresh ingredients and be a pretty decent gaucamole.

I agree with another poster that every other brand I have tried was just dreadful. Strange texture with a terrible bitter taste from too much lime trying to be used as a preservative. If you can't get AvoClassic I wouldn't try anything else to try to extend you homemade recipe. I'm sure it would ruin it.

There is always the option of moving closer to reasonably priced avocados. You can make new friends but you can't replace fresh guacamole.

I'll look for the AvoClassic when I get off work today....thanks so much for the suggestion...as for moving closer to cheaper avocados.....I'll give it some thought! icon_wink.gif LOL

Thank you all for your ideas....I really appreciate your input. And yes, I agree that most store bought versions are nasty, which is why I was hoping someone could tell me about one that was decent! So I have two things to look for today and I'll also take the other posters advice about adding sour cream, tomatoes and extra onions. Thanks again everyone!

Ditto with everyone else....don't mix the commercial made with your freshly made recipe. You have to do one or the other. Either it's all commercial made or all freshly made.

Trader Joes also sells big bags of frozen avocado halves that are quite reasonably priced, and they are great for guac.

I had the same issue last year. I was cooking a mexican dinner for 45 and avacados were $$$$. I made what I had extended w/onions and served about 4 different salsa w/it. Of course the guacamole went first, but no one seemed to mind icon_smile.gif

    Good luck!

Just wanted to take a minute and let you guys know the party was a big success.
Thank you so much PotScrubber for the suggestion of the AvoClassic gucamole icon_biggrin.gif .... I found it at Kroger and it was $3.99 just like you said and it was really good....big chucks of real avocados in it....and it was perfect to stretch the homemade guacamole that I made....I'll be using that brand from now on.
