    Can already cooked tofu be frozen?

    Due to a mishap, I had to cook up four packages of tofu that had been frozen and then defrosted. I now have more stir-fried strips then we can eat in a month! Can it now go back to the freezer? Also, what will the consistency be like when defrosted?

    hey harry- saw no one had responded publicly to your question and i have been wondering if prepackaged tofu can be frozen? did you end up freezing your already cooked? i recently began doing a lot of cooking with tofu and i really enjoy it.

    Hi gymgirl, yes, tofu can be frozen. I have never frozen the silky type, but other consistencies hold up nicely and for a very long time. The ones I just recently cooked were in my freezer for a bit over 6 months. Suppose it be grainy and crumbly when defrosted but I have never had that happen to me. As far as refreezing...I never got to that point as one of my students wanted to make something for a group and took it off my hands.

    Freezing tofu (before it's cooked) is supposed to give it a "meatier" texture. I read somewhere recently that if you freeze it for a little while it is a little like fish in texture, but longer it becomes "meaty". Most things I have read suggest to slice it first, wrap it, then freeze it. I've been meaning to try it, but have had a little trouble buying enough - the supermarkets seem to not stock enough. Maybe I'll visit an Asian store.
    Freezing silken tofu doesn't work very well. It happened by accident in the back of my fridge icon_rolleyes.gif - it turned into a sponge. icon_lol.gif
    I too am curious about freezing cooked tofu. Anyone know if you can freeze a tofu vegetable quiche?

    thanks! good info. i tend to buy too much and then have to eat it up pretty quickly so it won't go bad. being able to freeze it will be helpful.
