What you describe sounds like Marmorkuchen (Marble Cake). Here's a
picture of it.
This is the recipe translated:
Ingredients:
225 g Margarine
225 g Sugar
1 Tbsp Lemon zest
5 eggs
225 g flour
2 Tsp salt
1 Tbsp backing powder
4 Tbsp rum
50 g half and half cream
20 g cocoa
50 g chocolate spavings (dark chocolate)
This one is for a loaf tin, but it looks pretty much the same as the cake I used to make when I was growing up in Germany from my German cookbook (I have left it there, so I can't give you that one unfortunately).
In a kitchen aid mixer mix the lemon zest, margarine, sugar eggs, flour, salt, backing powder, rum and cream. Start mixing it slowly and then increase to highest setting until everything is combined well. You can add finely chopped almonds into this. Grease and line a loaf tin with baking paper. Pour in 2/3 of the dough. Add the cocoa and chocolate shavings to the rest of the dough. Place the dough in three big blobs onto the lighter dough and bake for approx 65 minutes in a preheated oven at 180°c/350°F. Check for doneness by inserting a wooden skewer, which comes out clean if done.
