    Rouladen Cooking Class

I thought it would be a fun idea if we all got together and cooked Rouladen together one weekend. I will ask the photo club to participate and hopefully some of them will be able to take step by step photos. icon_smile.gif

I am seeking your tried & true recipes for Rouladen - please post them as actual recipes on Zaar, not in the message box. (If you first need to post within a message to get translations, that is fine, but then please submit the recipe into the database.)

Share links to already posted Rouladen recipes here in this thread. Chefs who have posted recipes will need to be able to be on hand during the cooking class weekend (you will be able to pick the times and it wont be all day icon_smile.gif ) to answer questions on the technique of making rouladen, etc at the same time everyone who is participating in the event is at home in their own kitchens, preparing rouladen.

Need input on dates please, so let me know which weekends work or do not work. icon_smile.gif

Rouladen is delicious! It's thin pieces of beef steak rolled around bacon, pickle and mustard, browned , then braised until very tender and tasty.

Don't feel bad SG, I had no clue what it was either. And I have a very heavy German ancestry in my family icon_redface.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

I'm game, though it'd need to be in a week or two. icon_redface.gif DH is doing terms right now and we're all in uproar. It'd be fun to cook him some German food.

Thanks, Heather, for going above and beyond when I asked for rouladen help. I will keep watching for the weekend you decide - I think I'll put my attempt on hold until I can see what you all do. This may seem weird to people who never had this scrumptious dish, but I am so psyched!!

Are you going to make one specific dish or just let people choose from the ones already on Zaar? I am happy to do some photographing in advance if I know which dish. I could do it this weekend. Just say the word icon_smile.gif

Well, I was hoping that some of the folks who have already posted recipes would be able to recommend their version, and then we could all choose whichever of those recipes we wanted to make - not necessarily just one recipe, but a small selection of recommended versions. Hopefully, several of us will make the same recipes so we can all ask questions while we cook together over the same weekend.

Basically, we'll pick from a few recipes recommended here and then agree to make the recipe over the designated weekend or day (date to be decided) and we can log in throughout the day to offer comments and suggestions during the cooking process, helping those out who may be having difficulty with any part of the technique.

Thanks Sackville Girl and anyone else who is able to help out. icon_smile.gif

Things that would be great to see photographed would be rolling process, the ingredients, and the finished product.

    Need the following:
    1. recommendations for recipes to try (please recommend only those that are already posted or you have just posted on Zaar) and then provide the reicpe link or name & id number here

    2. photos of the cooknig process, if you are able to(you do not have to photograph food to participate)

    3. need input on good dates - preferably on a weekend over 2 days to allow for any religious observances.

Heather I'd do the pics, but unfortunately I really don't like rouladen, just the gravy that you get from the pan juices is one of the best in the world!

this is my recipe rouladin which i got from an old friend. i don't add pickles because of dh, but it is traditional. i used toothpicks to hold them together but you can also use string.
i haven't made it in a while so i'd love to participate.

Hmmmm...not too many suggestions on dates. Perhaps we should do this as a cookathon instead? Perhaps do a German foods cookathon for April? I still would love to see some step by step photos of the rouladen though, if anyone is able to do so. Regardless, need some input on dates.

I no longer have a digital camera, or I would take some photos myself.
