    Fall Bake-Along?

    Would any of you be interested in doing a fall bake-along one week at a time? I'm thinking of once a week posting a bread category and then everyone who wants to participate can make their version of that type of bread and post pictures. You would be able to do your baking and posting at any time during the week. No real 'rules', just the fun of baking and comparing recipes and results. You would be free to use the recipe of your own choice. I think it might be a fun way to push ourselves outside the box and try a few new things. If the weekly item is something you are already proficient at, then you can be a mentor for those who have less experience (or even show off a little bit!). icon_lol.gif

    If enough people are interested, I would like to start mid-September. It's still in the mid 90's here and I'd like to wait for a bit cooler weather.

    I will pick the weekly category, but I would love to have suggestions from you for possible categories. Here's your chance if you have been wanting to try something new and need some support! Give me your requests!

    This could be lots of fun! How many takers do I have?

    I think this sounds like fun, but still have no oven. So I'd be limited to things I can make in the bread machine or that are griddled flatbreads or something of that type.

    OMG, I didn't realize you were still without an oven! Is it fixable or do you have to replace it? I was once without an oven, about 20 years ago, for about 2 years. It was horrible, but looking back I now wonder why I didn't just go out and buy a toaster oven. They make some pretty nice larger sized ones now and they aren't that expensive.

    I do have a toaster oven, but it's older and not quite large enough. I might buy a new one and limp along. And if I could just get my smoker set up, that would work as a stove. I was thinking of doing it today, as it's not beastly hot today, but John had a tiny setback - not serious, but took time and attention - maybe tomorrow.

    I really need to remodel the kitchen badly, so keep putting off replacing the stove....

    Wild Yeast Sourdough Starter is my current project. I used to have a bread machine, but never was satisfied with the results... so I gave the machine away and vowed to do any future bread without. A couple of years later I bought a much longed for KA mixer for the sole purpose of making bread. That was in 2008. Have I baked any bread yet? Only beer bread, yeah. No, I don't procrastinate. I don't know why I have such aversion to yeast, but I do. Your sourdough starter seemed perfect to me. I figure if I can accomplish this then I may be able to do any breads. I have looked at all your "stickies" on sourdough breads and have started Wild Yeast Sourdough Starter and am now just starting day 3. Many thanks for your time on this topic!
    If things progress as I hope they will, I would like to join the Fall Bake-Along.

    Sounds great, Sloe Cooker! Do you have any suggestions of what you would like us to bake for our first round?

    If you will let us help you, I promise that you will learn how to bake good bread!! We will walk you through it. We all have our "oops" breads from time to time, but they are rarely inedible. It's just part of the learning process.

    Good luck with the starter. Be sure and keep us posted on how that is going, as well!

    Hi Donna, I am not experienced in bread making so I would be happy to follow the group to gain the experience. I have never been a big bread lover, but suspect that may change with fresh bread around!

    About a year ago I took a single day, 4 hour WW bread class, and was given measured out ingredients to take home and bake a loaf of bread. I was afraid of failure because the recipe seemed very difficult, so I never made the loaf.

    Well, I refuse to be afraid to bake bread any longer!

    I start day 4 of your Wild Yeast Sourdough Starter tonight. So far so good. Will probably need to ask a few questions along the way, so thanks for being helpful and sharing your knowledge.

    Best way to learn is by digging in and baking! There are a number of folks who had not baked before wandering over to this site, and they are all baking bread today. So come on in and join the fun!

    Thanks for the encouragement Duonyte. I am also inspired by my aging DM's love of bread. Now, as of last year, that we are neighbors, I can run down a (hopefully delicious) half loaf of warm bread to share!
    I will refer future questions to an appropriate thread, so not to "hijack" this one. Really stoked to be on board with the bread making adventure!

    I learned to bake breads here under the tutelage of duonyte, Donna and others here on the forum. It's now my favorite hobby.

    I too learned how to bake bread here with Donna and others standing by my side - don't think I'd ever have tried it without them. I still consider my self learning but have turned out some really good loaves IMHO.

    I'd be very interested in this and think it would help me a lot in my bread making quest. I love to try new and different breads but some time just get a little nervous icon_redface.gif this is just what I need to improve even more.

    Hmmmm, suggestions - I'm willing to try just about anything but love the idea of that Japanese one you listed awhile back!
