    why is the 3 Tbs sugar divided?

    I'm not sure why it is written that way, except....

    You add it into the sour cream at step 6

    6. Combine sour cream, remaining sugar and vanilla. Spread over cheesecake.

    It isn't divided. It's 2/3 cup sugar plus another 3 Tbsp sugar. The contributor apparently wanted to make it clear that the two amounts of sugar were to be kept separate, as the 2/3 cup is used in Step 2 and the 3 Tbsp in Step 6. Instead, it creates confusion.
    The clearer way to have written it would be to list two separate ingredient entries in order of use instead of together.
