Jar has his annual exam next week (Tuesday afternoon). (Isn't that a Moody Blues song?)

I don't imagine it's going to be a big deal - he'll get his blood tests done and get his heartworm & flea stuff. And he is excellent about that. The biggest issue will most likely be the waiting area (with other random dogs).

However, I think the time has come to start thinking about weaning him off the Prozac - I think it's done its job, so now we start working with Jarly Uncensored. icon_eek.gif

    Wish me luck. icon_confused.gif

I think you will be pleasantly surprised Kris.

Dawson has been on Prozac for about a year for the spinning and circling and general anxiety. A month ago I started weaning him off (he is totally off it now) and we can't really see much if any difference. He is definitely a high energy young dog and a total nuisance but that is just who he is. If you find Jar difficult once he is off it you can always go back to it but I know that you'd prefer him without it if possible. Good luck!

Friday I take both critters in for heart worm tests and whatever. I have to rethink a few things. I have always tested for heartworm but never used the medication. I also have not done the flea and tick prevention thing in 20 years and haven't had any fleas and only one tick in that time frame. We are moving to an area that is a hotbed for Lymes disease and I know that the vet will encourage me to do the preventative thing... I'm thinking I will have to go that route. With both of them needing at least one shot plus all the rest it's going to be costly. *sigh*

We were thinking about it last year, but the doctor said that if we weren't sure, he wasn't ready.

    I'm pretty sure this time.

And yeah, I do the heartworm and flea treatment every year too - and it does add up. Fortunately, he doesn't need anything else this time, though, so there's that.

I will just be happy if he manages to hold it together in the waiting room. icon_smile.gif

Our four, rather five will be going to the vet in the next week. May have to take out a loan. Mom pays for Princess, which helps, but just the heartworm for the four is pretty costly, plus a couple of them are due for shots. Molly doesn't need anything but want to have our regular vet take a look at her. My DD gets her dog a heartworm shot every six months. If that doesn't cost much more than the pills, I may go that route. Zoey sometimes won't even take the chewey pills. We only do the flea prevention about a month in the fall and a month in the spring in OK. Have never had a problem in Mn with fleas. Kris I don't blame you for wanting to get Jarly off Prozac. And congrats K9 on getting Dawson off them. I bet Jar doesn't have any problem with the other dogs in the waiting room. You've done such a good job with him.

    Thanks, Connie. icon_smile.gif

My vet prescribes a combination flea and heartworm thing - we haven't had a problem with it, and he only uses it from May through October, I think it is. It's about $100 for the year, but he gets the the super-sized stuff. icon_wink.gif

I've set up a savings account for once-a-year things - Jarly's vet, Minerva's vet, insurance, etc., and every paycheck, I transfer 1/24th of the total - then, when I get that $200 vet's bill for Jar, then the$150 bill for Minerva in the same month, I just transfer it back. Kind of nerdy, I know, but it makes my life a little easier. icon_wink.gif

Kris sounds like you have a good plan for vet bills. I didn't know there was a combo flea/heartworm medicine. We have to keep our four on heartworm medicine all year round since we are in Oklahoma from October to April, otherwise we could do the six month thing too. Luckily our girls are little so doesn't take as much med for them. Not sure it's much of a savings though.

Connie, the stuff we just got is called Advantage Multi, and it was 8 vials for about $100. It's the biggest size they have - 88 to 110 lbs. (whew, he just snuck in under the wire at 108!) I know the company usually has a special deal - in this case I paid for 6 and got 2 free. I'm pretty sure they do the same sort of thing when you buy more.

I found that it didn't cost much more than the flea stuff alone, PLUS it's one fewer thing to have to deal with. I like dealing with fewer things. icon_wink.gif

Thanks Kris. I'll ask our vet about it when we go. I agree, the fewer things you have to deal with the better.
