    what is garam masala and is there something else I can use for it?

    Garam masala is a mix of spices. Many groceries would carry it, especially if they have an Indian spice section. It provides a very characteristic flavor and I think your dish would be lacking if you omitted it. I buy mine in a grocery store that has a large Indian food section, it's quite inexpensive. You can also type "garam masala" into the search bar above to find recipes posted here to make your own.
