Hey K9, you and Pots have been hanging out here for a while, has Food or Zaar ever had a type of Throwdown contest?
Lets say, like a Gumbo throwdown, I have a couple ideas but I was wondering if it has been done before.
One idea is, which I kind of already ruled out, is 2 recipes of the same thing, 2 chefs, 1 recipe for each chef. (Like me and Pots and Gumbo for example) But there is really no incentive for a bunch of people to make each of our Gumbos and vote on them, that kind of contest really needs to be live and the chefs making there Gumbo and people just tasting and rating. Like in Bobby Flay's show, and that can't be done here.
Another idea is, everyone who signs up puts up a Gumbo recipe, then pairing up the chefs with 2 recipes not their own, they make and judge each one, they have to pick 1 to move on, and using the proccess of elimination, keep going until there is an ultimate Gumbo winner. But that is not a good idea either, because buy the time we illiminate all but one recipe we will be so tired of Gumbo we will never make it again
ANYWAY, I was wondering if it has been done and if not, any ideas to have a throwdown type contest?????????????????
It would have to last long enough for people to make 2 different recipes of the same thing, but not so long where people would lose interest or forget.

Potsie might know more Chip. The only contests I know of are done in the contest and events forum and I don't recall seeing a throwdown.
I think it is a cool idea - maybe you and Pots can work something out. The reviews should be a blast!

Hey K9, I have held 3 contests here in CC remember, one I gave away a new fondue set, another I gave away a new pasta maker and the 3rd one I gave away 3 premium Zaar memberships.

Oh. That was probably in the days when Potsie refused to tell me what and where CC was. I tripped over Canadian Cooking thinking that was it and wondered what all of the fuss was about.
Sorry to have missed it - I could use a new fondue set.

Yep. A throw down competition would be really cool!
I've already given away my secret using a homemade seafood stock and Kitchen Bouquet and Chip uses a chicken stock so it really wouldn't be anonymous with a gumbo recipe.
Everyone likes Chip better than me and I would lose to him for sure because he is so damn charming. Just poking fun at ya Chipfo.
But... if anyone wants to do a throw down on chicken and dumplings I make a kick ass pot of C&D. Mama Pot Scrubber even buys me the ingredients to make a special batch just for her that she doesn't have to share and she is one helluva great cook in her own right.

Ha! I remember when you were a newbie trying to navigate around the Zaar forums! You've come a long way, Grasshopper.

Yeah, we have known each other for while
Me and Pots have even met in person, along with Vel (V'nut-Beyond Redemption), Starlita and Suzycrue. Vel traveled from Singapore to Texas just to meet us. We all had a good time. Pots is a good person, really fun to be around. The girls had to take turns getting a picture of them acting like they were biting him because he always says "Bite Me".
I even still have the video of all of us meeting at the "Twisted Root" in Dallas - Starting from the first person shown - Pots, Starlita, Vel, me (with camera), Suzycrue and her husband Robert and son Jeremy -
Anyway, I will be thinking of how to do and Throwdown here on Food.

I remember when you all met - there were a ton of pictures that left the rest of us really envious!
I also remember having a virtual party on your farm

i am cajun and i've been making gumbo since i was 8 years old. my grandma had me stand on a box at the stove to learn to make a roux. i do not use a recipe, but, i have found this to be a very authentic chicken and sausage gumbo. this is the way i like it here in Cajun country. I only like okra in shrimp and okra gumbo.

i have an excellent étouffée recipe. i'll post it later.

I just hope that I remembered everything when I wrote it down while eating it, I love gumbo as well and have made it may times, this time I just through it together and didn't think about keeping track as I went.
And as far as the okra, in my opinion it isn't gumbo without it, but, I do have family raised in Baton Rouge and they say it is an option.
Okra comes from Africa and what I have come to believe is that the word gumbo or gombo is a translation of an African word for okra and thats where gumbo gets its name, so how could it be gumbo without okra, that would be like making chicken soup without chicken
I re-heated my gumbo last night and it was just as good as the night I made it, I may have to jar this stuff and sell it
Pots, I have to at least see your recipe since you talked about it.
Gumbo is always best on day two after the flavors blend together
