Yes. And if you start with 12 oz of
unwhipped, heavy cream, yet get 12 oz of
whipped cream.
Or maybe less, because the incorporated air could cause the whipped cream to float!

Yes, if you start with 12 ounces of liquid (unwhipped) heavy cream and whip it, you will still have 12 ounces of whipped cream, BUT its volume will equal 3 cups (cream doubles in volume when whipped) - where as a 12 ounce container of Cool Whip will give you 4 1/2 cups.
The point I was trying to make is that most Cool Whip recipes specify a container size (not the number of cups needed) - Replacing whipped cream for Cool Whip requires knowing how many cups of Cool Whip are in a specific sized container so that you can have the same
volume needed for your recipe.
Keep in mind too, that "real whipped cream" is much more dense (heavier) than Cool Whip which is 40% air by volume, so you get more cups (volume) of Cool Whip for the same 12 ounce (weight) than you do with real whipped cream.
I hope that is clearer.
This info comes from Kraft Foods:
