I wonder if that was a regional thing back in the 1950's? I was also in school (1949-1962) in NYC, and I had 6 "quite visibly pregnant" teachers during that time. I believe their contract at the time allowed them to work through the end of their second trimester (6th month). We also had many male teachers back then - in fact they seemed to outnumber the female teachers at least in the NYC public jr high and high schools. As for the Parochial schools, the lay (laity) teachers were mostly female. There seemed to be very few male lay teachers in Parochial high schools back then).
