Which recipe number? Many chili purists believe there should be no beans in chili at all, only meat - especially in Texas.

Someone recently mentioned hominy.
But I'd tend just to leave them out if I didn't want them.

Larry, I like black beans in chili but also use pinto and kidney beans. I'm not a purist, and I find that most beans taste pretty similar in chili, once they cook up with the seasonings.
If you are looking for something to use instead of beans, you could leave them out and I think I've seen recipes with quinoa or barley but that would be very untraditional.

I suggested hominy (posole, NOT grits) in another thread the other day, as it has a bean-like texture and is very nutritious. If it's a texture problem, though, it might not be liked because it's so similar.

My MIL used to add cooked (el dente') (sp)elbow macaroni as a substitute for the beans.
Hominy is a great idea too!
