K9, I agree with Bonnie, and I do think so many people take their doctor's advice and use it for a reason to hold back. My orthopedic doctor told me I'd not be able to use my shoulder/arm for at least 2 months. I can already take my bra off, can't put it on yet, I can raise my arm a little higher than shoulder height and most importantly for me anyway, is he told me I'd sleep in a recliner for at least 2 months. I won't be a month post op until Monday and last night I slept in my bed all night and had the best sleep I have had since surgery. Will I now get in my bed every night? Probably not because with increase in movement I am sure there will be times it is too sore to use the bed. I think we all need to push ourselves a little each day, but I also understand those that are afraid to and I don't condemn them. There is also nothing wrong with trying to push yourself more and if you see you can't do it then back off.

When I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia I got on the Internet and read all these people complaining they couldn't do this or that and it depressed me and I felt sorry for me. I quit going to those groups and made up my mind that I was not going to let fms control my life, I can say that my fms is controlled and I am the one that did it.

    Whoo hoo! Great going Jacqueline!
I love that you had the determination to improve more rapidly that prescribed. I am sure it wasn't and isn't easy but I truly believe that the mind is more powerful than any pharmaceuticals.

I have always loved the phrase "Don't let what you can't do stop you from doing what you can do"

Laury - absolutely check with your doctor before trying new therapies including Yoga. I know from my visits to the nursing home here in town that there are a great many exercises that people with very little initial mobility can do. It doesn't always work quickly but it is wonderful to see bedridden people walk and get more out of life.

When you check with your doctor about Yoga ask her about resistance bands for strength training. That is what we used in Cardiac Rehab and I still much prefer them to weights. You can slip one in your pocket or purse and do a little at odd times throughout the day. Heck, you can watch tv and do strength training!

Leslie, those are good ideas!! I will add them to my Aski The Doctor list. I bring it along to my appointments.
There are so many parts that make up the whole which is why I ask her what she thinks. Then Tom, my husband, decides which of her recommendations we will use. Often I think I can do something that they would prefer I not do.

Jacqueline, I am happy for you that you can do even more than the doctors think you can.

What an inspirational video K9! Makes me want to find a yoga class and give it a try.

I may swear but I don't swear as to the benefits of many things. icon_wink.gif Yoga would be an exception. I started it thinking that it would be a total bore. I was completely amazed at the difference even a few weeks made. From using my hand to propel me up from a reclining position I was able to just pop upright. I think any system that concentrates on stretching and balance the way yoga does is wonderful. You don't get hurt by it either! (The exception might be 'hot yoga' but I've never done that.

You inspire me, Lesley, to get back to yoga. I'll look for a class.
Thanks so much for the nudge.

Wow, Lesley! You have several people just in this thread to consider yoga.

I got another day of exercise completed. I have doctor's appointments Monday and Tuesday. I may have oral surgery this Friday. I try to get all exercise done on days I don't have doctors visits.

    Have a good weekend everyone!!

Yeah, I have my sticky mat at the ready but I can't find my yoga blocks. Two thick books will do. I didn't sign up for classes this session because I was going to miss the first 2 classes. No worries, I have a dvd and a great instruction book so can do it on my own for the next couple of months.

My balance totally sucks and yoga helps tremendously - mind you it will take a week before I can balance on one leg without clutching a chair for support. Got to start somewhere though.

Good luck with the Dr. appointments and I'll keep my fingers crossed that you don't have to have oral surgery. You have enough of a strain on your body as it is right now. icon_sad.gif

    Wishing you a great weekend!

Yoga is someting that has never caught on in this area, being we have no community center or Y or anything like that no one has ever taught it. I have done some that is on my Wii Fit but don't really understand it but I certainly could use something to help me with my balance. Oh, my goodness, K9, I have seen in videos people just being able to jump up, I am lucky to get up using my arms and hands. I'd love to be able to do that but am afraid I may be getting a little old. My sister and I were discussing age yesterday and I made a comment that I really didn't feel that old and I just didn't see how I could be getting a senior citizen discount, she looked at me and said, well you are that old, you are going to have to accept it.

Age really doesn't have much to do with it Jacqueline. I golfed two years ago with my SIL and a friend of hers about the same age between 70 - 75 I'd guess. Both had been doing yoga for less than a year. This lady 'Jan' was squatting down to line up her putt (never works for me but hey) and squatted too far so that she landed on her bum with her legs at a 45 degree angle in the air. In one smooth movement she rocked on her back (did a backwards roll) and popped right up. I stared at her in amazement. She just grinned and said 'Yoga'. She is at least 15 years older than me and was my inspiration to get to a class.

eta - my Mum's yoga instructor is 87. She started in her late 60's.

Just a quick check in. I am still sick, I think it is starting to affect my balance. I popped up from a sitting position yesterday and a few seconds later I was holding on so I wouldn't fall over. All colds I get always affect my ears, they stuff up as soon as I start getting sick, and I know I am starting to get better when they start crackling. Which has been happening for the past 2 days. Hopefully soon I will be well enough to exercise.

tasb, so sorry you are sick, well keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Laury hope all is fine with you, too.

K9, do you have a specific yoga video that you'd recommend? I'd love to give it a good try.

Everyone, I noticed that Laurlie was doing a post with members and goals. I don't esp. like listing members because that might make others think they are not welcome, when they are. Goals I think we could post from time to time and not keep a record of them. What do you all think? Believe me I am open to suggestions and it won't hurt my feelings if you disagree with me. This forum is for everyone and I would love everyone's opinion as I am sure Laury would, too.
