We recently bought a house and we are now on a pretty tight budget. I am trying to keep my grocery budget around $50 a week and I have to get 6 servings per meal with 6 meals per week. I'm also going to start making grab and go foods for breakfast. I am also hoping to find healthy recipes or recipes that I can make healthier by subbing ingredients. We don't have internet so it is hard to use the sifter.
Does anyone have any go to recipes they use? Casseroles and crock pot meals are always awesome. The only thing my husband won't eat is soup, unless it's a really thick soup. My kids also will not touch cabbage or black olives. Other than that, we are pretty open to suggestions.

Stir fry's to utilize fresh veggies or clean out the veggie bin are budget friendly and stretch meat servings. I often use ground turkey too. Serve with steamed rice. Here are a few recent successes.

I think you have some delicious ideas there to sift through.
My GO TO inexpensive meals are soup; and I know you husband doesn't like soup unless thick - but there are many thick soups you can make potato, lentil, a thick pasta tomato; many options all within a few dollars for 8 bowls.
Making your own bread. Especially if you have a bread maker. It is easy to make ahead, just come home and it is done. And it will save you lots of money. I don't necessarily use it for sandwiches; but great with dinner as a roll or slices of bread.
Mac and cheese; but think about what else you can do. Add chicken sausages, bacon, broccoli, ham, tomatoes; it can make a complete dinner.
Stuffed potatoes. You can make a simple beef and gravy or chicken and gravy to serve over potatoes. I love to add ham, broccoli and cheddar over a potato. It can make a meal.
SHOP BOGOS, I don't do every store, but my main store I check every week. I often get 2/1 pasta, sauces, cheese, butter, breads, canned items, fish, etc.
I just got chicken quarters at Walmart for 66 cents/lb. 9 quarters for under 7 dollars. plenty of chicken for at least 2 meals.
Also watch for turkey and hams on sale. I just picked up a turkey for 49 cents/lb. 15 lbs for 7.50. I can have turkey for dinner, turkey sandwiches, cream of turkey and probably turkey pot pie. Same with ham. I got one for 1.99. 14.00 and for me, just one; but made 6 dinners; and each of those 6 fed 3-4. So, watch out for those sales.
Egg dishes, quiches are a great way to use up leftovers in the fridge; watch for sales on sausages, a great use in omlettes and casseroles.
Shop farmers markets if available. Also, Mexican markets often have vegetables much cheaper.
And, don't forget that a bit of an investment can go a long way. A 10.00 roast may give you 3 dinners, even though it is 10.00 to start.
Ravioli, made with wontons. They are cheap. They can be filled with anything. You can make ahead and freeze. Just take out of the freezer, drop in water and serve.
Rather than buying jarred sauce, make your own. Buy canned tomatoes, simmer with garlic, onions, and some herbs. WAY better and WAY cheaper.
Potatoes, like scalloped potatoes can be made into a main dish with pork chops, sausages or ham. I got 4 minute chops for 1.75 last week. Those in a scalloped potato casserole along with some cheese would make a fantastic dinner under 5.00
And I think I already mentioned eggs ... breakfast is always good. But omelettes are great, fritattas, quiche, etc.
And pizza. You can pizza crust with anything.
Casserole can be good, but they can also be more expensive, and not always healthy; make sure to way the costs of health, costs, and serving size.

If you don't have one already, a freezer is a fantastic investment - especially with a family of 6! As S.C. suggested, stocking up on sales is a great idea, and with a freezer it gets even better.
If you're not too squeamish, I'd suggest trimming your own meats, too - especially chicken. I buy split breasts on sale for less than $1 a pound usually, and fabricate my own cutlets and tenders, with extra "scraps" that I use in stir-fry, etc. Then I use the bones in stock. My butcher shops also frequently offer whole primal cuts of beef for very reasonable prices - specifically rib loins and strip loins. Some will even cut them for you - I recently paid about $3.50 a pound for about 20 boneless rib-eye steaks - because I bought the whole loin.
Dried beans can be a great way to stretch your food dollar - I bought a bunch last fall from a farmer for about half what they cost in the store - and they're fresher, which means faster-cooking and better-tasting.
Pork shoulder is a great protein to stretch, also - a whole $10 shoulder can be used in so many meals - including breakfast. (Hash made from leftover bits of pork, along with random potatoes and veggies from the fridge and a poached egg on top make a great weekend breakfast!)

Great ideas with the dry beans and trimming your own meats. Buying special cuts can be very costly. I watch for sales on pork loins too. You can cut into individual chops which can be a savings; or cut into cubes for a stir fry.
Also, invest in a food saver; you can get some pretty good deals; and they are so worth it.
Tuna; Now-a-days there are some good recipes for tuna casserole; tuna melts, tuna wrap sandwiches.
And when pick of chick (whole cut up chickens) go on sale. Cook in a pot of water, a celery rib, carrot, onion, bay leaf and let it simmer. Remove the chicken and cut it up for over salads, sandwiches, or make chicken salad; also great for pot pie, or chicken a la king. Add the bones back to the liquid and let it simmer. Now you have fantastic broth. Freeze in ice cube trays for easy use. Once frozen, transfer to a ziplock bag.
Also, make sure to include rice in your diet. One is is healthy and a food stretcher. Stuffed peppers. Use rice to extend the amount of meat; and cut the peppers in half. Add plenty of vegetables to fill up the peppers without too much cost.
And if you like fish. Tilapia is a good average, mild tasting fish. Never buy Mrs Pauls or any of those fish products. I can get Tilapia for 3-4.99 lb; and get 3-4 filets. Great for fish sticks, nuggets, grilled, or sauteed. A great way to get kids to eat fish. Add fries and slaw; and you have a nice fish dinner.
Or, cook up a couple of fillets for fish tacos, or 3 makes 6 sandwiches.
Pasta carbonara is a favorite of mine. Pasta, bacon, eggs, parm, and I add a little cream. About 6.00, but add a simple lettuce salad or home made bread and it is a nice pasta night. Also, if you look for the sales on bacon (BOGO), you can get a great deal. Same with cheese. My store just had 2/1 cheese. 2.99 cheese and I got 2; basically 1.50 each.

My most important tip!
PLAN. If you don't, you will impulse buy, take out, drive through. And just get what you need vs making something and taking advantage of leftovers.
It is just me, but I bought a corned beef (I took advantage of a sale), but still 15.00. I made corned beef and cabbage. However, I got 2 main dinners. 1 reuben, 2 cold sandwiches, hash for 2 meals; and, 8 cups of vegetable soup. All out of a 15.00 brisket and 5 dollars worth of veggies.
You do the math. So, planning ahead, really does work.

thank you for all of the great tips and recipes! We do have a freezer that we will be using once we get our meat and veggie supply up to par. We also have an abundance of farmers markets in this area since it is very heavily Amish populated. I've also been hitting up the local ding and dent surplus store and my husband has a friend that drives a bread delivery route so he gives us the leftovers (like Sara Lee gourmet whole grain) which saves us a fortune. I just have to realize that I have to make a list and stick to it. That has been my biggest challenge so far. I have been planning weekly menus, healthy breakfast options and trying to find healthy and cost effective snack options. I also realized that I had compiled a cookbook of inexpensive meals so I am going through that to get some ideas.

Thx for the update PSU, good luck. You have a challenge, but heading in the right direction. It is hard trust me; I haven't had to do that; but I do cook for 4 ladies and have to watch costs, so, that is always on mind mind.
