Hiya,
Regarding Derek Fowler / Fowler Pottery I have been collecting these lamps for about 7 years now, and have met up with Yvonne several times which is where I have amased my knowledge from.
This workshop produced mainly pottery children’s night light’s, but also produced different lamps, indoor fountains and other pottery items between 1964 & 2000.
Brief History
1964 – Derek and his future wife Yvonne both working for Michael Caddy Associates making pottery night lights, due to poor management Derek and Yvonne took over the running of this struggling business and Derek Fowler Studios was formed and started operating from those premises, 46 Old Church St, Chelsea, London. The Michael caddy moulds were phased out and replaced by new ones designed by Yvonne.
1971 – Production moved from Chelsea to 22-28 Mossbury Rd, Battersea.
1983 – Due to new European standards etc, it was decided to merge the company with Van Hill Pottery, Norwich, But this joint venture was not to work, Yvonne Resigned, and after the company had what they wanted they dismissed Derek shortly after, Van Hill eventually took all the moulds to Norwich and closed the 22-28 Mossbury rd premises, the manufacture of the lamps by van hill as reasonably short lived.
1984 – After resigning Yvonne Fowler launched a new company named Yvonne Fowler Pottery Ltd “Fowler Pottery” From next door premises 20 mossbury Rd, Battersea, London. Because the moulds and designs were now the property of Van Hill, Yvonne had to start from scratch creating a new set of moulds, some of which were based on slight variations of existing models from the Derek Fowler range, Derek then joined her after his dismissal from Van Hill.
1996 – Derek passed away; Yvonne carried the business on from June until December to meet the orders, then closed the premises and sold the company to David Sharp.
1997 – Fowler pottery now owned and run by David Sharp and relocated in Kidderminster, production continued until 2000 when it was decided to break for a while.
