Whipping Cream Measurements

Hope someone can help me with this. When a recipe calls for "1 cup of whipping cream, whipped", do you whip it then measure or measure then whip?
Thanks for the help on this one.

People don't always enter this type of information clearly and it's hard to tell whether they mean 1 cup of whipped cream or 1 cup of whipping cream that you would then whip. Sometimes you can tell from the context of the recipe - what amount of whipped cream would it seem to require. If it's for a topping, then probably whipped. If it's to be folded in, could go either way.
Your best best is to try to contact the posting chef, or check the reviews for the experience/recommendations of others.

Hi, Duonyte,
It is even more confusing than that. There are 4 layers. A bottom crust, a cream cheese level, a lemon pie level and whipped cream topping. The cream cheese layer has 1 cup whipping cream, whipped and also the topping. I'm going to try whipping it first and then measure it. This way I can add more if necessary.
I can't remember where I got this recipe but, it wasn't on Food.com. I have run into this problem over the years and have always been able to contact whomever gave me the recipe. This time no luck.
Thanks for your input.

Boy, that sounds good. If it works out, I hope you post it with your clarifications. I'd bet a lot of folks would be interested in this one.

According to cookbooks and "the experts"...... if/when a recipe is "properly written" and it says "1 cup whipping (or heavy) cream, whipped" you would measure out 1 cup of cream, whip it (usually to firm peaks) and add it to your recipe.
When the recipe says "1 cup whipped cream", you would measure out the cream after it is whipped, then add it to your recipe.
Cream doubles in volume when whipped....
1/2 c cream = 1 c whipped cream
1 c cream = 2 c whipped cream
Unfortunately, when recipes are not properly written, then it is open to individual interpretation although it is usually easily figured out depending on the recipe.

Thanks, I I think that will work.

I would read the recipe the same way Dee does, all things being equal. Especially if there is something similar in the ingredients, for example, 1 cup dates, pitted and chopped - measure the dates, then pit and chop them. But I have had some unpleasant surprises along the way.....

Thanks, I've actually had a few surprises myself.
