Hello all, I'm new here; and I came to get some help about picking out a pressure cooker.
I pretty much decided to get one from Pressure-Cooker Outlet
http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/index.htm
But, right now I'm torn between a Presto 8 quart model...
http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/prestop8qtss.htm
And this Mirro of a similar size. Anybody have any suggestions or reccomendations?

I don't have one, and can only add that these are both stovetop models, which Cook's Illustrated recommends over any electric model. Both of the brands are well known, long-standing brands. If no one here has any suggestions, you might want to look for these models on amazon.com, and check reviews there. I find that to be a helpful source of information on these types of questions.

Hi nodis21,
This is the one I have: http://www.fagoramerica.com/cookware/pressure_cookers/duo_line/duo
I have been using it for about 4-5 years now and I love it.....my only regret is not getting the 8qt (mine is a 6qt).
As for the brands you mentioned, I have no experience with either one. I do know that they are both "old, reputable" companies.
You could check Miss Vickie's Pressure Cooking website for more info on choosing a cooker.

There are numerous discussions about pressure cookers here in the archives. you may want to take a look at some of them for additional advice.
Of the pressure cookers you are asking about, the Mirro model operates at a fixed pressure of 10psi and the Presto model's pressure regulator is adjustable (I looked on the mfgr's website to be sure). Since most pressure cooker recipes are written for 15psi, I think you'll be more satisfied with the Presto model.

Cook's Illustrated recommends the Fagor model, in case you are interested.

I have, I think, a Mirro brand. Not sure and I'm not at home. Mine is stainless steel and some of my reading recommended that. Let's just say I feel more strongly about my pressure cooker than I thought was likely. It's an amazing tool.

I had/have an old Mirro 4 qt pressure pan I loved (probably 40+yr old) & needed a new gasket for it. Ordered one and it does not fit, cover does not seal and build up pressure. Any ideas,?? Have called Mirro, out let store.
I reallly don't want to buy a new one, but pan is no good without a gasket. I know this has nothing to do with previous question, but would appreciate any ideas someone may have. Thank You
7essure outlet store, without any help: Pan is no good without gasket, And I don't really want to buy a new one.

Are you sure you got the right size gasket? Hard to believe there were so many models, and the gaskets all look the same. http://www.pressurecooker-outlet.com/prestorings.htm

If you cant find the part you need or the source to obtain one from the above link, try contacting (emailing) Miss Vickie, she is usually very helpful.

Welcome to Food.com Chef #770664!!
I bought a mid-prized Mirro pressure cooker and was disappointed that the pot was so thin and lightweight. Guess I was thinking all pressure cookers were like my Aunt's that she used many years ago. Didnt want to spend a lot of money since I wasnt sure I would use one that often and now I wish I did.
Sure hope MissVickie's or the pressure cooker website works for you and a new gasket will be on it's way soon.

For what it's worth regarding the pressure cooker problem. You are probably not going to find the gasket you need. I had the same problem awhile back so I finally gave up and here's what I did. Went to Bed, Bath and Beyond, used their discount coupon and got a 5 qt. one for about $15. And I like it more than any I've ever had. It's light weight, easy to handle and has a better gasket than Presto or Mirro. And works as well as if it costs ten times what I paid. For the life of me, I can't figure why people pay in the $100. and up range. Of course, I'm aware that when it does need a gasket, I'll just be replacing the whole thing. Who care, as long as this one is still available?

Thank you for the help, We don't have a Bed,Bath and Beyond in our area. I will have to try and check their web site and hopefully find it. I have accepted the fact that I will never find a gasket for it. Have been checking flea markets, auctions, etc for a used one hoping to find a used one.

I heard Pressure Cooker Outlet is very expensive, now a days most people are intergrating to new places like amazon and ebay. I would advise you to purchase one there. I would say just go for the 8 quartet model, I have used it and it works wonders.
There is a link to a good site that provides quality pressure cookers at a cheaper price in my profile

Presto is a step above Mirro in quality. I would go with Presto. Check retailmenot.com to see if that website has any discount codes out right now. Last week I bought my pressure cooker online at Kohl's and got 30% off by finding a discount code there. I ended up paying 22$ for a 6 qt.
