    Question on UK tablespoons of yore

    In Australia a tablespoon is 20ml, I know a US tablespoon is 15ml and after some Googling the current definition in the UK is 15ml as well, but I found a few references to an imperial tablespoon being 18ml (was of course in ounces).

    I'm guessing Australia used to be the same and rounded up to 20ml while the UK rounded down to 15ml to make it consistent with the US once metric came in. But I wondered if anyone knows if the above is correct and if for older British recipes whether they are likely to use the larger tablespoon measure, and if so when the definition changed in popular use such as cookbooks?

    I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question, but many years ago (and indeed even when I started cooking, measurements of ingredients by the average cook would be by the spoons that they used in general, so you would see recipes with the ingredients by dessertspoon or tablespoon or teaspoon, and they would be the spoon size that you ate your dessert with, or stirred your tea or whatever. I vaguely think that it was only when we went to metric that it was standardised, but don't quote me on that icon_smile.gif

    These days if it says tablespoon, I use a regular measuring spoon, which as you say is 15ml.

    Thanks Sandie. I spotted a recipe here and a review suggested the amount of dry ingredients (6 tablespoons in total) was a bit light on for it to set and being an old British recipe I wondered if that was the reason.

    Anyway might go ahead and do it using 6 x 20ml Aussie tablespoons. Will save me measuring out 18 teaspoons if nothing else icon_smile.gif.
