    We've been watching the BBS mystery series ie Inspector Lewis, Inspector Barnaby via netflex. I've noticed the use of beans for breakfast in some of the scenes. Of course, I knew about the beans, bangers, and mash for breakfast through some cookbooks, magazine articles and my husband who spent about 4 months there in his younger years. But, that got me curious, when did the use of beans become popular in the UK? And why for breakfast? Any great UK based bean recipes you know? icon_biggrin.gif

    After delving in I'm beginning to wonder what I'm reading may be true. Maybe the Heinz baked beans are made with Heinz ketchup and beans and not tomatoes, tomato sauce, passata, etc. This makes sense does it not? It's made in by the same company.

    I don't know when beans became a popular British breakfast item, but they've been an unquestioned part of a full English breakfast for the 15 years I've lived in the UK and certainly for a long time before that.

    I think they are similar to the canned baked beans one can buy in the US. They are definitely something you buy in a tin/can, not a recipe you make from scratch unless you have lots of time on your hands and want to be pretentious (and not many people who want to be pretentious will waste their pretentions on baked beans).

    I'm not a great bean expert as I don't like baked beans (US- or UK-style) but I understand there is tomato in the sauce and they are fairly sweet.

    Beans, bangers and mash is not a breakfast food. It's a lunch/dinner dish. Even though you might have a breakfast in Britain with beans, sausages and fried potato cakes made from leftover mash, bangers and mash (with beans or peas or whatever) is definitely for later in the day.

    As somebody who lives in Ireland (we have the mostly same brands as in the UK) I can confirm that Heinz baked beans have their own tomato sauce, it's not like ketchup, though it is the same company.

    I was quite amused by yur talk of baked beans, I know its not what you, in America call baked beans as you make them from scratch. These are only from a tin. We have them with toast and it does appear at breakfast, but we can eat them anytime. Students and all of us at some time have eaten them cold straight out of the tin. I actually have a whole baked bean recipe book.
    But a really good recipe is baked bean pasties. Just ready bought pastry, large circles with beans inside, then folded up and crimped, egg wash and bake. realy good and economical.
