    [Elven] Lembas Bread

    Do any of you Kiwis have the real recipe for Elven Lembas Bread? For *The Lord of the Rings* films, some bakery in Wellington was producing it for use in the film. They made a LOT of it, according to Peter Jackson because the crew munched on it all the time. icon_lol.gif

    Knowing what movie studios are like if there did happen to be someone here that worked for the Wellington bakery they'd probably get sued for $1.5 trillion for disclosing the recipe icon_lol.gif.

    I wonder though if it's a specific recipe anyway, maybe in the context of a movie they just got a local bakery to cook a bread that fitted the look and tasted pretty decent so the actors didn't mind eating it?

    Oh, they were very specific about it on the LOTRs appendices discs. They made Lembas bread for about 2 years (all through the film shoot) and they just said they got a local bakery in Wellington to do it. I would assume that this bakery has since made hay of that honor. The actors said it tasted like a scone.

    In any case, I thought the local newspaper might have interviewed them about it and by this time someone might have given up the recipe since it was more for looks than for taste. Here's a fun little thing:

    I found this for you:

    Lembas Bread

    2 1/2 cups of flour
    1 tablespoon of baking powder
    1/4 teaspoon of salt
    8 tablespoons of cold butter (1 stick)
    1/3 cup of brown sugar
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon maple syrup/honey
    2/3 cup milk/heavy cream (or more, if necessary)
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla

    1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 C.)
    2. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt into large bowl.
    3. Add butter and mix with pastry cutter until the mixture resembles fine granules.
    4. Add the brown sugar and cinnamon, mix thoroughly.
    5. Add the milk/cream, vanilla, and maple syrup; stir until nice, thick dough forms.
    6. Roll the dough out about 1/2 in. thickness.
    7. Cut out 3 in. squares; transfer to cookie sheet.
    8. Criss-cross (do not cut all the way through) each square from corner to corner with a knife.
    9. Bake for about 12 minutes or more, until bread is set and lightly golden.
