Special, Embarrassing, Dining Experiences: do contribute!!

I have 2 which are special for me and are very far apart (though both took place in the early/mid 70's)

The first took place in my single days and I was on relieving staff with the bank and had been posted to a country branch for 4 weeks and staying at the local motel were one night they paired me up with a travelling salesman and he ordered a steak blue, well he got it served to him 3 times and sent it back each time as overcooked, so the owner came out and asked him to come into the kitchen and show them how he liked it cooked so they could make note for the future. Well of course I had to follow to find out for his steak looked blue to me on all 3 occassions. Well what took place in the kitchen astounded me, they took a steak out of the fridge and put it on plate for him, he lit the gas and put a pan on the heat and plonked the steak in and then turned and then put it on his serving plate and declared it cooked - IT WAS BLOODY RARE - the pan had not even heated up and when I asked why not just take it out of the fridge and put it on your plate, his aswer was IT WOULD NOT BE COOKED - IT WASN'T ANYWAY BY MY ESTIMATES.

The second one was with the man who is now my DH back then he was my BF (defacto) and we dined at the revolving restaurant in Canberra and from there we got our recipe of Delectable Crayfish (Lobster) as they cooked it in front of us and it was the first time I had a pina colada for me it was just an awesome night of dining.

Oh Pat, you gave me a good laugh about that boyfriend with his RAW steak!!! You must have been so embarrassed!!! So many of my casual boyfriends embarrassed me wayyyy back -- mostly because of their youth and being naive!

I am going to change your subject line just a little -- as we could get amusing stories that way!!

One of my embarrassing moments was when I was already in my 20's, and a very nice guy was taking me out -- all being very sweet and platonic.

So one night he invited me to (what was then) the "best" restaurant in Cape Town.

He duly ordered wine (it was probably plonk, but can't remember). The wine waiter poured him a little, to taste. As is the normal habit.

We waited. Boyfriend looked at his glass. The waiter waited. I waited.

Then the boyfriend said to the waiter: "Are you mad, or something?! Just pour the wine! What are we waiting for?!"

I nearly died with embarrassment. I am no snob, but I could not believe the stupid git did not realise he had to taste the wine and pronounce it fine and drinkable!!

The boyfriend did not last long after that! I preferred them to be ay leetle more sophisticated!

Zurie thank god the raw steak man was NOT my boyfriend, the motel staff sat us together in the dining room were I was staying for the 4 weeks I was working at the local country bank branch (I was on relieving staff and filled in for people on holidays, travelling all over WA). The couple who owned the hotel were very sweet but they had a thing about trying to match me up with some of there other customers and sitting me at a table with them for either breakfast or dinner, after a while though I took to having my breakfast in the kitchen, quite often cooking it up myself.

I am sure many of our members have had embarrassing experiences with either boyfriends/girlfriends, or other diners!! I hope they tell us the tales!
