    Reason for making yr own mashed potatoes!

    Lazy me used a packet of dry mashed potatoes tonight, to save time.

    However ... this is a well-known brand, so rather no names, no pack drill ... but when I read what was IN the powder, I almost discarded it.

    Please note that the front has a lovely photo, it's called "Homestyle", and tells us: "made with 100% real mashed potatoes with butter and natural flavor."

    Well, that's stretching the truth! Read what it really contains. I confess I recognise some ingredients as possibly harmless, but don't know which are potentially harmful, but natural they're not ...

    potatoes, powdered cellulose, salt, maltodextrin, cream, salt, contains less than 2% of natural flavor (oh yeah? Then why lie about it?), modified wheat starch, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sugar, corn syrup solids, nonfat milk, whey, modified corn starch, mono and diglycerides, sodium caseinate, sodium bicarbonate, colored with artificial color and yellow 5 lake, sodium silicoaluminate, soy flour, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium bisulphate, tocopherol and ascorbyl palmitate.

    And they call it "mashed potatoes"??? icon_biggrin.gif

    I know - isn't it awful? I use the stuff too, especially when I need just a little potato for a bread recipe, since it adds such great moisture. But I'm all for home made, whenever possible.

    Plus nearly all the packets have a lot of salt. I was lucky to find a good tasting one that had no salt in it, which is important for us, we are really watching sodium at home, but I don't think the store carries it any longer, and I have not seen that brand elsewhere....

    duonyte, you'd think that by this time they'd have found a way to create a fairly natural mashed potato powder, with maybe an additive to keep it from clumping ... but if using good potatoes in the first place, WHY all the flavouring and seasoning and preserving agents?

    Anyway ... and we ask why cancer cases are increasing by leaps and bounds. icon_eek.gif

    I just watched that whole episode. I've never heard of that show before but I really like it!

    As for the dehydrated mashed potatoes.. seems like they could leave a lot of that junk out but then the flavor would be off or - heaven forbid - we'd have to season it ourselves. I guess there are just some really lazy people out there.

    Some people just prefer dehydrated / instant mashed potatoes ( to some, it's a childhood comfort food ). They're great for thickening soups/stews/gravies and using in potato bread recipes.

    Various dehydrated foods are used in disaster relief packages, there are as many reasons as there are situations / circumstances. icon_wink.gif

    Backpackers use dehydrated foods - space and weight limitations being the primary reasons. It all becomes good eats out in the wild icon_cool.gif icon_smile.gif

    I had been living in the United States for 2 years before I knew these things existed (shows how much attention I paid to that section of the grocery store!). I'm all for short cuts, and semi home made- to an extent!

    I just couldn't get my head around the idea of Mashed Potato out of a box. I've never tried them, never bought them, never cooked them...

    I'd prefer to spend a bit more time and make REAL mashed potatoes... at least I know what's in them icon_smile.gif

    Sometimes I think the US takes convenience foods to an odd extreme, but the rest of the western world is headed in the same direction =/

    Zurie, that's a pretty big list of ingredients for instant taters. I admit to keeping a box of instant taters on hand. I don't like foods that are too processed, I like to cook mostly from scratch but since I don't use potatoes too often I like the long shelve life of the instant variety. When I choose them I look for the brand that has the shortest list of ingredients. This is what's in the brand I use:

    Potatoes (Dried), Mono and Diglycerides (to Improve Texture), Freshness Preserved by Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bisulfite and Citric Acid.
